    A Cancer Diagnosis Inspired Vi

The Columbia PhD and cancer survivor’s life-changing diagnosis led to the creation of PowerYou AI

Most modern-day technology is built to help people move faster, produce more, and make their personal and professional lives easier. Even though technology can help keep someone’s life organized, when it comes to important life-altering decisions, people don’t use spreadsheets, calendars, or productivity dashboards. Instead, they make choices internally, where identity, fear, memory, and self-trust affect actions.

That internal space where decisions are made is something Vif thought to, and how AI can be a tool for self-improvement.

As a Columbia PhD and cancer survivor, Lei is helping direct where AI development is headed next. AI won’t just help people complete tasks; it will also help them with personal development. Lei believes that AI can help people become more self-confident, resilient, and able to make better decisions.

“But existing AI tools are not designed for the complexity of a person’s inner life over time. They often lack emotional continuity, robust personal memory, and a deeper coaching architecture. That is where PowerYou AI comes in,” says Lei

PowerYou AI was born out of Lei’s belief that a personalized AI coach could help people learn how to manage their mental health so they can move forward in their private and professional lives with confidence.

The Inspiration and Creation of PowerYou AI

Lei was studying for her PhD at Columbia University when she was surprised by a breast cancer diagnosis. Despite the life-changing news, she had to continue living her life as a student and fulfilling her responsibilities.

“I still had to function,” Lei says

Though there were tools she could use to organize almost every detail of her daily life, none of them could help her make sense of what she was dealing with internally.

“That experience revealed something that has stayed with me ever since: we have built extraordinary technology for the outer world, but very little for the inner world,” Lei says

Technology has given humans the tools for logistics, efficiency, data, productivity, and performance, Lei points out, but not for the most important moments in human life. Each person has a story they carry inside about who they are and has viewpoints shaped by fear, uncertainty, grief, and self-doubt. It’s that internal core that controls how we make decisions.

Lei built PowerYou AI to help people “confront fear, rebuild trust in themselves, and decide who they are becoming.” The mission of the platform is to help users understand themselves on a deeper level so they can turn self-awareness into a tool they can use to become the person they want to be.

    Support for Mental Fitness

Most AI tools are built to help people with tracking their “outer” world priorities, such as tasks, schedules, productivity, and performance. Lei says PowerYou AI has a different approach and focuses on the “inner” world. It can help users identify patterns in their behavior that affect how they make decisions and impact their lives by looking at the roots of behavior, such as thoughts, emotions, beliefs, and the state of the nervous system

“So mental fitness is the framework. Inner-world coaching is the method. And becoming is the goal,” says Lei

The team at PowerYou AI defines mental fitness as “the ability to strengthen the inner capacities that shape how we think, feel, respond, and act.” The AI platform focuses on three different core pillars: clarity, regulation, and agency.

The definitions of the three core pillars according to PowerYou AI are:

    • Clarity: the part of the mind that helps people understand what they are feeling, the patterns they repeat, the stories they believe about their life, and what things in their lives actually matter.
    • Regulation: this pillar is about the body and nervous system and how it helps people during times of stress and fear when they feel overwhelmed or are having an emotional reaction. The goal is to help people respond instead of react.
    • Agency:  this pillar is about action and encourages people to use clarity to make choices, change behaviors, and do small repeated actions that will help them become the person they want to be.

How Poweryou AI Is Different From Other AI Tools

Most people know about AI platforms like ChatGPT and Claude. As industries adopt AI, many workers use it to help write emails, search, code, summarize, and complete tasks. Though Lei believes this is a powerful use of AI, she points out that this usage is mostly for people’s external lives

“What we are seeing now is that people are bringing AI into a much more personal domain. They are using it to reflect, process difficult emotions, prepare for hard conversations, clarify decisions, and understand themselves more deeply. That tells us something profound: people do not only want AI that helps them do more. They want AI that helps them change and grow,” Lei says.

Since the existing AI chatbots aren’t designed to help people in this way, they can’t really help them in personal development. AI chatbots aren’t built to help with a user’s complex personal life. They aren’t programmed to have “emotional continuity, robust personal memory, and a deeper coaching architecture.”

PowerYou AI is different from other AI because it is built with a coaching infrastructure to help support the user’s mental fitness. It was designed specifically to remember, adapt, and support the user’s personal growth.

Human Development Is Not a One-Time Interaction

PowerYou AI coaching is based on the concept that people change when they repeat actions. Through the three pillars of the platform, the users learn how to understand themselves so they can pause before they react in difficult situations

Clarity, regulation, and agency help people decide what the best action is before they act. This could mean setting a boundary in a friendship, repairing a relationship, or trusting themselves enough to make a choice and not give in to fear. PowerYou AI was designed to help users in these important moments. It’s about learning to act, not react

“Through our proprietary Neuro-Mapping Protocol, Agentic Coaching Engine, and Personal Memory Graph, PowerYou AI connects the dots across a person’s life. It can understand what someone is working through, identify recurring patterns, and help translate insight into real-world behavior. Over time, the experience becomes more attuned because it doesn’t start from zero every time,” says Lei.

A Dedicated Partner for Your Inner World

PowerYou AI is designed to be part of a future where AI isn’t just used for productivity, but also as a proactive coach. Lei envisions PowerYou AI acting like a supporter in a user’s everyday life. It would be able to recall what the user is working on, such as “self-trust,” and be able to recognize that an upcoming presentation would be a trigger for doubt. It could offer support and suggest somatic grounding exercises to help with regulation.

One interesting thing Lei points out is how naturally some people include PowerYou AI in their daily lives. Users have been using the platform to “warm up” before they have to make a hard decision, build their self-confidence before difficult conversations, and relax after an intense day at work.

Another surprising thing is how honest people are with PowerYou AI. Some users have shared with the AI coach that they weren’t able to say in other places. Lei hopes that PowerYou AI can help users overcome the social pressure they feel when they are talking to others.

“By reducing the fear of judgment, we can help people reach the truth more quickly, not for confession, but for growth. Because once someone can name what is really happening inside, they can begin to work with it,” says Lei.

The Need for Coaching Is Universal

Lei points out that for a long time, high-quality coaching was a premium experience for people with the money to afford a human coach. Yet, the need for coaching is universal in Lei’s opinion. Everyone has moments where they need help clearing their mind and getting a grip on their emotions before making decisions.

Lei believes that in the near future, AI will democratize access to coaching so it will be available to everyone.

“An AI coach will become an invisible thread woven into daily life: not something people use only in crisis or during a scheduled session, but a continuous layer of support for the inner world. It will meet people in the micro-moments where growth actually happens: before a difficult conversation, after a setback, when they are caught in self-doubt, or when they are trying to choose courage over avoidance,” Lei says.

PowerYou AI was built to be a part of a future where mental fitness is a part of everyday life, just like physical fitness. Personal coaching won’t be just for a few, but for everyone.

“It will become a daily, accessible infrastructure for human becoming, helping people build resilience, self-awareness, agency, and the capacity to live in alignment with who they want to be,” says Lei.

The United States lacks universal health coverage, but it was not the only 2026 World Cup participant in that position. In Mexico, for example, 78% of the population was covered for a core set of health services. Official sources explicitly described coverage as nonuniversal in Bosnia and Herzegovina and documented incomplete reforms in several other…
