The Lagos State Government has reiterated its commitment to promoting healthy living through sports, saying it is expanding partnerships with public and private stakeholders to encourage active lifestyles and improve the overall wellbeing of residents
The initiative forms part of the state’s broader efforts to reduce lifestyle-related diseases through regular physical activity, healthy nutrition and community engagement, while positioning sports as a tool for public health promotion
The Director-General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Lekan Fatodu, stated this during a courtesy visit by marathon athlete, foodie and Nestlé Water brand ambassador, Ade Enioluwa, to the commission’s office at the Teslim Balogun Stadium on Wednesday
According to a statement released by the Lagos State Government on Wednesday, Fatodu said the commission’s responsibilities extend beyond organising sporting competitions to fostering partnerships that promote healthy living
“Ours is not just organising competitions and programmes. We want to see the interventions of state and non-state actors who are actually amplifying the message around healthy and active living,” he said
Fatodu cited international best practices in promoting physical activity, recalling a United Kingdom policy that encouraged commuters to alight one bus stop before their destination in order to increase daily walking
“Every step that you take counts in improving your health,” he added
He added that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had opened up the commission to individuals and organisations committed to advancing sports development, noting that the state’s sports agenda had evolved since 2024 to emphasise recreational participation, talent discovery and collaborations that promote wellness
“The goal is to build a sporting ecosystem where health, culture, and opportunity meet. With millions of views already on sports-related content from Lagos, the Commission is working to scale partnerships that encourage Lagosians to move more, eat well, and live better while promoting our own leading individuals who are advancing public health through sports,” Fatodu said
Speaking during the visit, Enioluwa said maintaining an active lifestyle had enabled him to balance his love for food with regular exercise
The marathon runner, who recently completed the Lagos Run in 4:56:00, also spoke about his preparations for the forthcoming sub-four-hour Nestlé Water Marathon scheduled for later in the year
Enioluwa said, “Discipline and consistency keep him going despite his commitment to other things. Beyond six-packs and awards, his biggest motivation is his support team and the desire to show young people that, if you put your mind to things, you can achieve far more than you think you can.”
The statement added that Enioluwa was presented with an Award of Excellence in recognition of his commitment to an active lifestyle, alongside food packs aimed at encouraging healthy nutrition and regular exercise
The Lagos State Government has continued to promote sports as a key component of preventive healthcare, with authorities increasingly encouraging residents to adopt healthier lifestyles through physical activity, proper nutrition and community-based recreational programmes
