There have been no reported deaths from the virus this year

Health officials say West Nile virus is transmitted by the bit of an infected mosquitos. Those infected with the virus don’t show symptoms or display mild symptoms.

They say 1% of those infected develop a serious neurological illness such as encephalitis or meningitis. Severe illnesses can affect anyone of any age, but those over 60 are particularly at risk including those with medical conditions like cancer, diabetes, hypertension, kidney disease and those who have had recent organ transplants.
