LAS VEGAS (KSNV) —Health officials in Southern Nevada are investigating a case of cyclosporiasis in a Clark County resident who traveled out of state

The Southern Nevada Health District is looking into the case as it works to determine any potential public health risk tied to the infection. No additional details about the patient or the travel were released

Cyclosporiasis is an intestinal illness caused by the parasite Cyclospora. The investigation comes as health officials seek to understand whether there is any risk of broader exposure in Clark County and what steps residents can take to avoid infection

Dr. Brian Labus, an associate professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at UNLV’s School of Public Health, addressed what cyclosporiasis is, whether cases are seen regularly, whether there is any indication of community spread in Clark County, and how people can help prevent getting it
