There are times where you can eat less than others around you and not see results. There are many reasons why a weight loss diet may not work for you. Habits, metabolism, stress and many other factors come into play when trying to lose weight.

Eating Less Is Not Always the Same as Eating in a Deficit

You can eat less than others and still not lose weight. Your body will lose fat if you are consuming less calories than you burn over a period of time.

A calorie deficit diet can fail you if you do not stay in a deficit for long enough.

You may think you're eating less than someone but their body could require more calories than yours based on many different factors.

You may be eating less during the day and consuming more than you think in the evening or over the weekend. It all depends on your average amount of calories you consume over a period of time.

Hidden Calories Can Erase Your Progress

There are many ways you can consume more calories than you think on a weight loss diet. Cooking oils, dressings, sips of drinks while making your food or bites you eat while cooking. All of these can add up over the course of a day.

If you are not measuring what you eat at home you may not realize you're consuming more calories than you think. Just because you have less food on your plate than someone else doesn't mean you're in a calorie deficit.

    • Use less oil when cooking.
    • Limit your drinks that have calories.
    • Be careful of nuts, cheese, dressings etc.
    • Bites while you cook can add up.
    • Make sure you don't over eat on the weekends.
    • Healthy foods have calories as well.

Once you start tracking what you eat you'll realize how easy it is to over eat without knowing it.

Why Your Body Adapts to Lower Intake

Your body will begin to adapt to eating less once you do it for a period of time. Your body will want to conserve calories and may decrease your activity or make you hungrier than usual.

Here’s a breakdown of how your body adjusts to lower calorie intake over time.

    Body ChangeCauseImpactSolution
Lower MetabolismCalorie DeficitBurns Fewer CaloriesAdjust Deficit Slowly
Increased HungerHormonal ChangesCravings & Overeating RiskFocus on Protein & Fiber
Reduced ActivityEnergy ConservationLess Daily MovementTrack Non-Exercise Activity
Efficient Calorie UseProlonged DeficitSlower Fat LossIncorporate Diet Breaks

Understanding these adaptations can help you create a sustainable calorie deficit.

When you eat less your body may start to burn calories more efficiently which can cause your calorie deficit diet to not work as well as it did when you first started.

Try to find a calorie deficit that works for your body and allows you to eat enough protein and stay active.

What People Miss About Portion Size

Portions can play a role in whether or not your weight loss diet works. You may be eating less than someone but if that person has a higher calorie need than you then you're not going to see results as fast as them.

Make sure you are eating foods that will keep you full on a calorie deficit. There are certain foods that are more calorie dense than others.

    • Protein will help keep you fuller.
    • Fill up on fiber.
    • Don't drink too many calories.
    • Be mindful of ultra processed foods.
    • Restaurant food can have more calories than you think.
    • Eat more vegetables.

Portion size can trick you into thinking you're eating less than you really are.

Stress Sleep and Hormones Change Everything

If you are not sleeping well and are stressed you will have a harder time sticking to your diet. You will crave more food and have less will power.

Your hormones can play a role as well. If you are female, you may notice you eat more during certain times of your cycle. Stress can also make you crave certain foods.

Make sure you are getting enough sleep if you are on a calorie deficit diet.

How Movement Outside the Gym Affects Fat Loss

You need to move your body if you want to see results on your weight loss diet. You may be working out but not moving enough throughout the day.

If you've decreased your activity outside of your workouts you may not be burning as many calories as you thought you were.

Make sure you are staying active when on a calorie deficit.

Signs You Are Undereating Too Hard

If you are eating too little you will eventually eat more than you should. Your will power will run out and you will over compensate.

There are many that undereate on their weight loss diet and still are not seeing results. This can be due to them not being consistent with their calorie deficit.

If you are not eating enough, your body will not want to burn as many calories as it did before. Find a number that you can sustain for a longer period of time.

How to Make Your Plan Actually Work

Make sure you are tracking what you eat. If you are not you will not know if you are actually in a calorie deficit or not.

Once you know what you are eating and your calorie deficit, you can start to change what you eat to better suit your needs.

    • Weigh your food.
    • Eat protein.
    • Eat more vegetables.
    • Monitor your progress on the scale.
    • Try to walk more each day.
    • Keep track of what you eat on the weekends.

Stick to what you know will work for you. If your current plan is not working then change what you are doing.

When to Adjust Expectations Instead of Calories

Maybe you need to be patient. If you want to lose weight at a faster rate than you may not be allowing for a realistic timeline.

There are many reasons why you may not be losing weight at a fast pace. Give your body time to adjust and start looking at your progress over a longer period of time.

If you are eating less than you used to and not losing weight, try increasing your activity and sleeping more.
