La. (KNOE) – A new study from LSU’s Pennington Biomedical Research Center and FMOL Health shows weight-loss surgery is helping young people shed pounds and improve their overall health

Patients in the study lost an average of 29 to 32 percent of their total body weight and kept it off for up to five years. Among patients who followed up, 94 percent saw their Type 2 diabetes go into remission, and 67 percent showed improvement in hypertension and other chronic conditions

Weight-loss options range from supervised medical programs and prescription drugs to bariatric surgery for patients who need a more long-term life change. Amy Patterson, a nurse practitioner at Rejuvime Medical, said excess weight carries serious health consequences

“If you are overweight, if you’re obese, you’re at higher risk for liver issues, fatty liver disease, and then also just joint pain, body aches,” Patterson said. “Your body’s having to carry that extra weight, which is going to lead to more disability down the road.”

LSU researchers said surgical complications were rare — just 5 percent of patients had issues within 30 days of their procedure

Patterson said maintaining healthy eating habits after surgery is critical to sustaining results

“People have lost a lot of weight with it,” Patterson said. “Over time, your stomach can stretch out. You start eating more food. You can gain that weight back, and that’s pretty common.”

Certified nutritionist Erica Osborne said what a person eats plays a significant role in weight loss — whether or not surgery is part of the plan

“Real food, eating fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and seeds, lean meats — every nutrient you consume counts,” Osborne said. “You’re going to want to prioritize protein because vitamin D, A, E, and K — a lot of just intentionality has to take place.”

Medical experts noted a healthy diet, and exercise is important in improving overall health

while bariatric surgery has become an increasingly recognized treatment option, what you eat always plays a big role in achieving and maintaining results. For adolescents and young adults. To find more information click ,here
