Garmin bought TrainingPeaks and TrainHeroic on Wednesday in a huge power move in the fitness landscape
The acquisition gives the tech giant two of the leading training and coaching platforms for endurance and strength sport
The brand’s existing portfolio of bike computers, watches, and trainers will be supported by the training and data systems they can integrate with
“TrainingPeaks and TrainHeroic share Garmin’s passion for empowering athletes and coaches around the world with world-class training tools, performance metrics and actionable insights” Garmin co-chief operating officer Brad Trenkle said Wednesday
“The addition of these highly successful platforms to the Garmin ecosystem will expand access to more authentic coaching experiences—connecting athletes with professional coaches who guide, motivate and inspire them to reach their goals.”
A press note issued Wednesday confirmed all 120 staff currently working at TrainingPeaks and TrainHeroic will become part of the Garmin workforce
TrainingPeaks is one of the most popular platforms in the endurance space right now. It’s used by amateur athletes, pro coaches, and Tour de France teams to track workouts and plan workout calendars
TrainHeroic offers a similar model, albeit for strength training
Garmin’s acquisition of TrainingPeaks and TrainHeroic gives it a foothold in all the key nooks of the fitness world
However it’s not yet clear what the acquisition means for users
It’s unknown how the Swiss-registered Garmin brand will use the data stored TrainingPeaks and TrainHeroic, or how the platforms will exist after the acquisition
Questions also remain about ongoing paid athlete and coaching subscriptions to those platforms, and what happens to the integrations that feed into them. TrainingPeaks supports data from fitness trackers that compete with Garmin, including Coros, Polar, and Wahoo
The news comes only months after rival tech brand Wahoo launched a 2-way integration with Coros in an effort to break Garmin’s grip on users’ data
