    KANSAS CITY, Mo. —

With hot and humid weather settling into the Kansas City area, many people are looking for ways to stick to their workout routines without putting their health at risk

For Olathe resident Jeff Cooper, that meant taking his workout indoors Saturday at Life Time Fitness in Overland Park

“It’s miserable out there,” Cooper said

Instead of exercising outside, Cooper opted for the gym

“Yeah, I come in here to get away from it. It’s nice and cool,” he said

Personal trainer Doloria Estrada said that’s a smart move when temperatures and humidity climb

“Definitely keep an eye on that heat index. It’s not just the temperature,” Estrada said

She said the heat can affect people more quickly than they realize and recommends taking regular breaks and staying hydrated

“Make sure that you’re drinking enough water every 60 minutes. Take a break. Don’t forget to drop some electrolytes in your water. It’s good for when you’re sweating and you just need to refill your body,” Estrada said

Life Time Fitness recommends several ways to reduce the risk of heat-related illness while exercising:

    • Avoid the hottest part of the day by working out early in the morning or later in the evening.
    • Drink 16 to 20 ounces of water for every hour of exercise in the heat.
    • Consider taking your workout indoors or into a pool.
    • Listen to your body and stop exercising if you begin feeling ill.
    • If you prefer to stay home, Life Time also offers online workouts through its app.

“I’m sweating in here, but hey, I’d rather be sweating in here than sweating out there,” Cooper said

If you do exercise outdoors, trainers recommend wearing lightweight clothing, using sunscreen and getting enough sleep to help your body recover from the heat
