When it comes to self-care, there’s no right or wrong way to do it. Everyone has different ways of taking care of themselves mentally, physically, and emotionally. Even though social media makes self-care seem like it should come naturally, it can be hard to take time to take care of yourself. So, I spoke to five wellness writers to see how they’re practicing self-care this summer

It can be easy to put your needs on the back burner during the semester, but that’s where summer comes in. Summer is the perfect time to focus on self-care and give ourselves a little extra love, and the ways we practice self-care this summer definitely look different from person to person: For some, it may look like following a routine, meal prepping and eating right, and going for long runs on hot summer days. For others, self-care might look like spending long days at the pool resting, relaxing, and resetting. I don’t know about you, but all these ways sound like a great way to spend the summer.

So, if you’re curious about the different ways the wellness girlies are taking care of themselves this summer, I did some internal investigation from the people who write all of your favorite wellness articles. So, here is how five Her Campus wellness writers are practicing wellness and taking care of themselves this season.

Emma, 23: “I’m staying offline and reading more.”

“This summer, I’m taking care of myself by spending time reading and deleting social media. Over the past few weeks, I’ve spent all of my time on social media, so I deleted it in hopes of taking a phone cleanse and being able to spend more time in nature with books. Reading is honestly so stress-relieving for me — it helps me take a break from reality, and while I’ve only read seven books this summer, I hope to read a few more before the semester starts!”

Ginger, 23: “I’m trying therapy for the first time.”

“I’m honestly struggling a bit with personal wellness this summer, despite the title of wellness writer. I’m good at making time for fun and relaxation. Right now, my wellness routine consists of bartending classes, line dancing, cozy gaming, pool days with my mom, and lots of trips to my women’s-only gym. But I am working on fulfillment by adding therapy to the equation for the first time, which is exciting!”

Jayona, 21: “I’m creating a life that feels and looks good.”

“This summer, I’m redefining self-care as permitting myself to slow down. Instead of feeling pressured to have everything figured out, I’m prioritizing rest, writing, nourishing my body, and creating a life that feels good — not just one that looks productive.”

Teairra-Marie, 20: “I’m practicing productivity in a way that feels good.”

“One way that I always take care of myself is by doing the 50/10 rule. If I’m doing a task — let’s say an assignment for school, cleaning up my room, or just a boring plain ol’ errand — I will set a timer for 50 minutes, take a 10-minute rest, and start all over again. It just helps me stay active and lets me take care of my body and well-being.”

Aleyni, 20: “I’m fixing my sleep schedule.”

“I have been trying to fix my sleep schedule since it feels impossible during the semester. Most days I try to wake up at a reasonable time, which for me is 10:00 a.m., as someone who used to get up at 11:30 a.m. consistently. I think it helps me be more productive physically and feel better mentally.”
