Infectious Disease Special Edition news story

Switching to long-acting injectable cabotegravir-rilpivirine (CAB/RPV; Cabenuva, ViiV Healthcare) every two months maintained virologic suppression as effectively as switching to daily oral bictegravir, emtricitabine, and tenofovir alafenamide (BIC/FTC/TAF; Biktarvy, Gilead) in a large real-world U.S. cohort, according to findings presented at AIDS 2026

The analysis used electronic health record data from the OPERA cohort, which included 101 clinics and represented approximately 14% of people living with HIV in the United States. Investigators evaluated treatment-experienced adults who were virologically suppressed before switching for the first time to either regimen between February 2022 and March 2025
