A growing body of research suggests that eating less protein, not more, may help people live longer and stay healthier as they age, particularly if they are not physically active
A review published Friday in the scientific journal Cell Press Blue analyzed findings from more than 350 previously published studies examining the relationship between protein consumption, metabolism, and aging

According to the paper, lower protein intake appears to improve metabolism across a wide range of species, from yeast and fruit flies to rodents and humans. It alters nutrient-sensing pathways, reduces cellular damage, and preserves healthy cell function. Several studies cited in the review found that reducing protein intake improved blood sugar control and led to weight loss, even when more calories were consumed
The researchers point to a hormone called fibroblast growth factor 21, or FGF21, as one of the primary drivers behind those beneficial effects. FGF21 levels rise when protein intake falls and have been linked to greater energy expenditure, improved glucose control, and lower inflammation
The review also highlighted several amino acids—including methionine, isoleucine, and valine—that may play an outsized role in aging-related processes. Restricting those amino acids in animal studies has been associated with improvements in metabolic health, fewer signs of frailty, and a longer lifespan
