Kan. (WIBW) -A charitable softball tournament held Friday through Sunday raised more than $71,000 for a summer camp serving children with neuromuscular diseases, pushing the event’s lifetime donations past $1 million

The tournament, known as “Hogball,” is named after one of the founding teams and held its 46th annual event in Rossville. Eight teams competed on the field and in year-round fundraising efforts

“Teams just raise money throughout the year, and then we come together, one weekend a year in Rossville, and play some softball and donate a lot of money hopefully,” Dennis Peerenboom, tournament director, said

The event has grown into a multigenerational tradition for many of the families involved. “

When my parents first brought me out here, I was in a stroller; I’m 32 years old, I’m still here,” Tyler Becker, player and Camp Milton counselor, said. “I’ve got 3 kiddos of my own, and they’re here as well, so they’re 3rd generational Hogballers.”

All proceeds go towards sending kids to Camp Milton, a summer camp for children ages 6 to 18 with neuromuscular diseases

“All the money goes directly to camp; we know where every dollar is spent,” Sandy Becker, Camp Milton’s fundraising and development director, said

Camp Milton is designed to give campers the same experiences as other children their age

“A lot of times those kids are told they can’t do something. And at Camp Milton, they find a way for them to be able to do it,” Peerenboom said

“We find things that they get to do at camp that they don’t normally get to do the other 51 weeks of the year,” Sandy said

“Smiles everywhere, camp is quite literally the best thing you can be a part of,” Tyler Becker said

Those interested in donating or signing up to be a camp counselor can visit campmilton.org. Registration to enroll children as campers typically opens in March
