The agency seeks to utilize AI to advance research and treatment options for people facing chronic and rare diseases.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced it is implementing the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to support biomedical research and accelerate discoveries as part of President Trump’s Genesis Mission. Launched in November 2025, the Genesis Mission focuses on utilizing AI, advanced computing, and other research enterprises to help solve some of the biggest challenges the country is facing.
The agency stated, “Working in partnership with the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), HHS will launch a series of National Science and Technology Challenges that invite America’s scientific community to apply next-generation artificial intelligence to some of the nation’s most urgent health challenges.”
The first challenge will be focused on identifying the root causes of various chronic diseases, while future challenges will focus on accelerating pediatric cancer research and transforming the discovery and development of new drugs.
NIH Director Dr. Jay Bhattacharya stated, “Patients living with cancer, chronic disease, and rare conditions cannot afford to wait decades for scientific discoveries to each them. Through the Bio Genesis Mission, we are harnessing artificial intelligence and advanced computing to help researchers…while upholding the rigorous scientific standards and responsible stewardship that earn the public’s trust.”
