Some of the most in-demand healthcare jobs can be performed remotely despite requiring direct caregiving skills

What’s more, two of the top eight in the category likely aren’t top-of-mind for early career planners eyeing clinical care among their preferred economic sectors. They seem too patient-facing for anything less than 100% in-person presence.

The two are urgent care physicians and psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioners.

These roles command annual salaries of almost $275,000 and around $148,000, respectively

Filling in the gaps—and then some

The findings are from Indeed’s Hiring Lab.

In a listicle posted July 31, Indeed economist Sneha Puri, MPP, explains that healthcare’s embrace of remote work owes much to the maturation of tech-enabled services like telehealth, remote patient monitoring and virtual triage.

Puri also cites the preference of aging Baby Boomers for convenience combined with the ongoing workforce shortage. The latter has much to do with the long waits for doctor appointments that have become the new normal.

“Employers are using remote flexibility to reach a broader pool of candidates for roles that have been difficult to fill, especially in clinical and clinical-adjacent fields,” Puri says

    Clinical professionals with digital connections

Health writer Taneia Surles, MPH, reports that healthcare and caregiving expertise are now showing up more often in remote job postings, accounting for 7.5% of all sought-after skills.

“Bedside care still largely requires in-person staff,” Surles adds, “but technological advances are creating more pathways and opportunities for clinical professionals to work from home.”

With that, Surles presents Indeed’s list of the eight medical jobs with the highest share of remote postings, noting that the data “hints at where the industry’s virtual infrastructure is furthest along.”

    1. Psychiatric/mental-health nurse practitioner

Median salary: $148,374 | Share of remote jobs: 13.2%

    2. Urgent care physician

Median salary: $273,988 | Share of remote jobs: 13.1%

    3. Licensed clinical social worker

Median salary: $78,529 | Share of remote jobs: 9.7%

    4. Family therapist

Median salary: $74,922 | Share of remote jobs: 8.3%

    5. Coding specialist

Median salary: $63,427 | Share of remote jobs: 10%

    6. Utilization review nurse

Median salary: $79,745 | Share of remote jobs: 7.5%

    7. Care navigator

Median salary: $63,319 | Share of remote jobs: 6.2%

    8. Epic clinical analyst

Median salary: $111,358 | Share of remote jobs: 7.2%
