Ga. (WTOC) – The City of Savannah has launched a series of gymnasium renovations across four local community centers in an effort to modernize public recreational spaces

Upgrades are underway at the Liberty City, W.W. Law, Tompkins, and J.S. Delaware community centers

City officials say while the individual gymnasium areas will be closed to the public during construction, the community centers themselves will remain open for all other non-gym activities

Renovations will vary by location but include total gym repainting, installation of new gym flooring, and the replacement of old bleachers, scoreboards, and basketball goals

“Our community centers are more than just buildings, they are places where young people learn teamwork, families come together, and neighborhoods are strengthened,” said Savannah Mayor Van R. Johnson, II. “By investing in these gymnasium renovations, we are ensuring that residents across Savannah have safe, modern, and welcoming spaces to play, compete, and connect.”

According to the city’s projected schedule, residents should prepare for the following gym closures:

    • W.W. Law Community Center Gym
      • July 21 – Aug. 3: Closed for gym repainting.
      • Aug. 3 – 11: Closed for demolition and removal of old bleachers, scoreboards, and basketball goals.
      • Sep. 7 – 28: Closed for new gym flooring installation and required curing time.
    • Liberty City Community Center Gym
      • Aug. 3 – 11: Closed for demolition and removal of old bleachers, scoreboards, and basketball goals.
      • Sep. 7 – 28: Closed for new gym flooring installation and required curing time.
    • Tompkins Community Center Gym
      • Aug. 3 – 11: Closed for demolition and removal of old bleachers, scoreboards, and basketball goals.
      • Aug. 17 – Sep. 7: Closed for new gym flooring installation and required curing time.
      • Sep. 7 – 28: Closed briefly for new bleacher installation (closures will be minimal; exact dates to be announced two weeks prior).
    • Delaware Community Center Gym

The city notes that these timelines are projected and subject to change. Updates will be provided on the city’s social media platforms, and residents are encouraged to check with their local community center for the latest schedule adjustments
