BofA’s $250 Million-Plus Annual Bill for Employee Weight-Loss Meds Is a Test for Other Employers

    Summary:
    • Bank of America spends more than $250 million a year covering GLP-1 weight-loss drugs for employees, part of a healthcare bill topping $2 billion.
    • CEO Brian Moynihan pairs the drugs with health coaching and says the bank is aggressively negotiating prices with drugmakers and pharmacy benefit managers.
    • Other employers are watching closely as per-patient costs climb into the thousands and some scale back coverage.

GLP-1 weight-loss drugs have gone from zero to everywhere in a few years. Bank of America just put a dollar figure on what “everywhere” costs

A Bill That Built Up Fast

Bank of America’s total healthcare spending is more than $2 billion a year

The drugs, sold under brand names like Ozempic and Wegovy, help people lose weight. The yearly cost per patient runs into the thousands of dollars

That is the math behind the GLP-1 boom. Huge demand and high per-patient costs have put employers across the country in a tough spot

The bank is the second-largest U.S. lender by assets. That size gives it real leverage when it negotiates with drugmakers and pharmacy benefit managers, the middlemen that decide which drugs get covered and at what price

Why the CEO Says It Is Worth the Money

He pointed to long-term health gains and possible short-term benefits, including fewer heart problems

“We see a great impact on the employees,” he said

The bank does not stop at the prescription. It pairs the drugs with health coaching to support weight loss and lifestyle changes, so employees have help building habits that last

“It’s been fascinating to watch our teammates’ behavior on these adjustments – the loss of weight,” Moynihan said

He also admitted the payoff is not guaranteed. Some employees will leave before the bank recovers its money, but offering strong benefits is the goal

The bank knows the result will not look like a typical investment. The return shows up slowly, and it is measured in healthier workers as much as in dollars

The Rest of the Country Is Watching

Moynihan made clear the bank is not accepting high prices without a fight. “Believe me, we’re pounding everybody on price,” he said

Bank of America uses its scale to negotiate lower prices with drugmakers and pharmacy benefit managers. That puts it in a different position from many other employers

Bank of America is going the other direction, at least for now

One of the biggest banks in the country is betting the drugs pay off. Many others are still deciding whether they can afford to

What the Bet Means for Your Health Care

The bottom line: When one of the country’s biggest banks says yes to these drugs and fights hard on the price, it shapes what other employers think is possible

The next few years will show whether the bet pays off. If healthier employees really do cost less over time, more companies may expand coverage

If the savings never show up, expect the opposite: tighter coverage and harder questions

For people who get insurance through work, the decisions matter. Your employer is watching this math just as closely as Bank of America is

The drugs may be a personal choice, but in many cases the bill is a workplace choice. And that bill is still growing
