Nebraska Medicine | Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center earns national ranking from U.S. News & World Report

    August 6, 2026

National recognition highlights the impact of Nebraska’s only NCI-designated cancer center

The Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center has earned a national ranking in cancer care from U.S. News & World Report, placing it among the nation’s top programs for treating complex cancer cases. The recognition is part of the publication’s annual Best Hospitals rankings and follows Nebraska Medical Center being named the No. 1 hospital in Nebraska for the 15th consecutive year.

The national ranking reflects the expertise of the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center’s multidisciplinary teams, which bring together specialists in medical oncology, radiation oncology, surgical oncology, hematology, pathology, radiology, supportive care, and cancer research to provide comprehensive treatment tailored to each patient

For patients in Nebraska and the surrounding region, the ranking represents access to nationally recognized cancer care close to home. It means patients can receive advanced treatments, participate in innovative clinical trials, and benefit from leading-edge research without traveling long distances to larger metropolitan areas

The Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center is Nebraska’s only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center, a distinction held by a select group of cancer centers nationwide. The designation recognizes excellence in cancer research, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment, helping ensure patients have access to the latest scientific discoveries and emerging therapies.

“Achieving a national ranking reflects the extraordinary work happening every day at the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center,” says Joann Sweasy, PhD, director of the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center. “As Nebraska’s only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center, we are uniquely positioned to bring groundbreaking research, innovative clinical trials, and the latest advances in cancer treatment to patients across our state and region. This recognition underscores the value of having a nationally recognized cancer center in Nebraska and what that means for patients and families who can access world-class cancer care close to home.”

“U.S. News & World Report’s recognition of the cancer program at the NCI-designated Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center reflects the exceptional care delivered by our multidisciplinary team,” says Joshua Mammen, MD, physician in chief of the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center. “We continue to seek to provide every patient with a personalized approach while ensuring access to the most advanced, evidence-based strategies in cancer prevention, treatment, and survivorship.”

The U.S. News Best Hospitals specialty rankings evaluate hospitals on factors including patient outcomes, experience, nursing care, and other measures designed to help patients identify hospitals that excel in treating serious or complex conditions. This year’s national ranking places the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center among the top cancer programs in the country.

The Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center is a partnership between Nebraska Medicine and the University of Nebraska Medical Center, bringing together patient care, research, and education under one roof. The center serves patients from across Nebraska, Iowa, and the broader Midwest while driving discoveries that help shape the future of cancer care
