Better sleep, less anxiety, more independence, reduced blood pressure and the list goes on. Physical activity in adults aged 65 and older has many health benefits, physical, emotional and mental
In Nevada, 28.8% of adults over the age of 65 regularly achieve physical activity guidelines. This includes 150 minutes of moderate or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity per week. Nevada ranks 26 in the nation according to America’s Health Rankings
For older adults who may not have experience or comfortability with exercise, there is Fit & Strong!, an evidence-based exercise class tailored to older adults because it combines exercise with health education. The class focuses on mobility, reduction of joint pain and the importance of long-term exercise habits
“I started in 2023 and have taken it every year since,” said Penny Modarell, a Fit & Strong! participant. “I have osteoarthritis in my feet and knee and was encouraged to attend this class by a Sanford Center for Aging employee. I love it so much I maintain the exercises when Fit & Strong! is not in session.”
In Northern Nevada, the Sanford Center for Aging is the only organization that offers this program to older adults at no charge thanks to grant funding. Conducted over eight weeks, this program touts the health benefits of exercise in a class setting that encourages engagement and interaction with other participants. Participants meet three times a week for 90 minutes each time for a led workout session
“Social connection is a great motivator to start any new program, especially exercise,” said Courtney Pennacchio, program coordinator for health and wellness at the Sanford Center for Aging on the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine campus. “At the conclusion of each session, we have an open discussion about the day’s topic. It is the group’s practical ideas and approaches to exercise maintenance that boost self-confidence and retention while also building rapport with similar goal-oriented people.”
Exercising in groups supports sustainability with consistency and a collective goal that inspires a person to keep showing up
“I was so glad to hear about this program,” said Modarell. “Fit & Strong! keeps you motivated and having a class full of people who attend every class that you can connect with is motivating too.”
With increased awareness locally, Sanford Center for Aging has noted a rise in participation. In fiscal year 2026, 91 participants completed the program, almost tripled from 2025
“I really love exercise and the science around it,” said Pennacchio. “I want to encourage people to maintain or increase their fitness capabilities so they can continue to enjoy their lives, but also to inspire them to be the best version of themselves.”
Fit & Strong! encourages exercise for people of all mobility types and can be modified for participants who need to sit or use walkers
“Tell the instructor if you need help,” said Modarell. “The program works; I have had less fatigue and pain in my legs since attending, and it is fun. I am going to stay active and mobile as long as I can.”
