A U.S. Marine Corps recruit died this week after suffering a medical emergency during a routine physical fitness evaluation at Camp Pendleton, military officials said. The recruit was participating in a scheduled assessment at the Southern California base when the incident occurred Aug. 1, military.com reported

According to the Marine Corps, the recruit experienced a medical issue while taking part in the evaluation and was transported to Tri-City Medical Center in Oceanside for treatment. Military officials said the recruit died Aug. 5, several days after being hospitalized, KPBS said

The recruit’s name has not been released. The Marine Corps said it is withholding identifying information until family members have been notified, following standard military procedures

Officials said both an investigation and a medical review are underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the death. The Marine Corps has not disclosed what type of medical emergency occurred or which portion of recruit training the individual was participating in at the time

In a statement, military officials said they are focused on supporting the recruit’s family while the review process continues. The Marine Corps indicated that additional information may be released at a later date once investigative procedures allow

Camp Pendleton, located in Oceanside, serves as one of the Marine Corps’ largest training installations and is approximately 40 miles north of San Diego. The base hosts a wide range of recruit and operational training activities throughout the year
