Trae Young has a lot to prove heading into the 2026-27 NBA season. The longtime Atlanta Hawks guard was traded to the Washington Wizards last year, and then given a 4-year, $212 million contract extension that had some pundits shaking their heads
Young has proven that he can put up numbers, averaging 25 points and nearly 10 assists per game for his career. But the question is if you can win with the 4-time All-Star. Many consider him an “empty calorie” player who has gaudy numbers, but with a play style that doesn’t contribute to winning

But a change of scenery can be just what a player needs to put those critiques to bed. And if his new workout video is any indication, he is taking this upcoming season very seriously
Young, who is listed at only 164 lbs at 6’2″, is shown flat bench pressing 95-lb dumbbells in the video. What is impressive is the control he exhibits throughout the motion. He has a slow eccentric, a solid range of motion, and good overall form. Even picking up 95-lb dumbbells in each hand can be awkward, but Young clearly can handle it despite his slight frame. It’s important to note that he doesn’t train like this year-round, and has a limited offseason to perform these types of workouts
As an undersized guard, it seems that Young and his trainers have made it a point to add strength without sacrificing athleticism. While some people reading may be able to flat bench the same weight, you have to consider that this is about 120% of Young’s body weight. As a basketball player, he also has a longer wingspan than the average 6’2″ person
Young clearly understands that the doubts about his game won’t be answered by another 25-and-10 season alone. For a player carrying the weight of a max contract and a fresh start, showing up to camp stronger than before is at least the right place to begin. The Wizards have hope for the first time in years with Young, Anthony Davis, and a slew of prospects. As point guard, “Ice Trae” will have to be the catalyst of winning basketball in Washington
