‘Remember the Titans’ star reveals the key to his lasting weight loss

Ethan Suplee reflects on the ongoing responsibility that comes with becoming a public weight-loss success story and explains why consistent support from like-minded people keeps him on track

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

“Remember the Titans” star Ethan Suplee spent years dramatically transforming his body, but the actor says the breakthrough that finally helped him maintain his weight loss came when he stopped viewing it as something he could permanently “cure.”

Suplee explained he saw the biggest change when he began treating his relationship with food and weight much like his sobriety — a lifelong condition requiring honesty, communication and accountability

Reflecting on his recovery journey with Fox News Digital, Suplee said repeated attempts to get sober failed because he believed he could simply complete rehab and move on. He believed taking 30 days away from drugs and alcohol meant the problem had gone away

“I haven’t had drugs or alcohol in 30 days,” he recalled. “That means I’m cured.”

    Ethan Suplee then and now

Ethan Suplee revealed his weight loss journey changed when he stopped searching for a “cure” and treated it like his sobriety

It wasn’t until he embraced ongoing accountability and open communication that he found lasting success, a lesson he later realized applied just as much to maintaining his weight loss

“My condition isn’t a condition with a cure,” Suplee explained. “It’s a condition that I can learn to manage.”

He added, “I did not apply that to weight loss for many, many years. I kind of was doing everything in my head, and the big boon to actually being able to maintain it was finding a group of people to be accountable to.”

Suplee has been candid about his decades-long battle with obesity. The “My Name is Earl” actor weighed roughly 500 pounds at his heaviest and ultimately lost around 300 pounds through years of diet and lifestyle changes. He has also undergone multiple skin-removal surgeries and now hosts weekly discussions on his show, “LifeLONG with Ethan Suplee,” about long-term weight management

“There’s some pressure from the world to continue to manage [the weight loss],” he told Fox News Digital. “But that’s something I’ve kind of designed.”

On his weekly live show and podcast, “LifeLONG,” Suplee regularly discusses the realities of long-term weight maintenance, inviting experts and people who have transformed their health to talk about nutrition, emotional eating, fitness and accountability. The show’s central message is that health is an ongoing practice — not a destination

“It’s a group of people, like-minded people, who come in, and we share what we’re going through, and we share our experience,” Suplee explained. “And I think we all do better because of that.”

After decades of trial and error, Suplee said his own experience taught him there is no shortcut to lasting weight loss. While he acknowledged that weight-loss drugs can be an effective tool, he argued they aren’t a replacement for building healthier habits

“As a kid, I wanted a magical diet drug so badly. And now we have what is a magical diet drug,” he said. “I think, unfortunately, it’s also not a one-stop shop. I think you can hop on a GLP-1 and experience weight loss. You can see the scale go down week over week for a long time without having to do anything else.”

“… I think when people imagine their ideal – I don’t think the GLP-1s get anyone to their ideal.”

Suplee said his own experience ultimately shaped a simple philosophy: There’s no single answer when it comes to long-term weight loss

He emphasized that lasting success comes from addressing the many factors that influence a person’s health and relationship with food

“I don’t think it’s ever going to be one thing,” Suplee explained. “I think it is partially the amount of food you’re consuming, partially the types of food you’re consuming, partially how sedentary you are, and partially your emotional and potentially mental behavior and relationship with food.”
