    KEY TAKEAWAYS:

    • The Bronco, Yo-Yo, 2K time trial, and Beep test are Cricket’s main fitness assessments

    • India has shifted from the Yo-Yo test to the Bronco test as their primary benchmark

    • Australia, England, and South Africa lean on the 2 km time trial for fitness testing

Bronco, Yo-Yo, and more: All fitness tests used in cricket

Fitness has become one of the biggest deciding factors in modern cricket, with the sport’s stop-start demands requiring explosive speed, agility, and the ability to recover quickly between bursts of effort. To measure this, cricket boards around the world use a handful of standardised fitness assessments

Each test serves a slightly different purpose, from measuring aerobic capacity to sprint recovery and sustained endurance. Below is a breakdown of the main fitness tests used across international cricket

    Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Test

The Yo-Yo test is the most widely recognised fitness assessment in cricket. Players run 20-metre shuttles, out and back, in time with a series of audio beeps that get progressively faster, with a short recovery break between each shuttle. The test measures how quickly a player recovers after repeated high-intensity efforts, mimicking the demands of running between the wickets and quick fielding. It was introduced to Indian cricket in 2017 by trainer Shankar Basu

    Bronco Test

The Bronco test is a continuous shuttle-run assessment that measures sustained endurance, recovery and mental toughness. Players run 20 metres and back, 40 metres and back, then 60 metres and back, repeating the sequence five times to cover 1,200 metres in a single unbroken effort. Because it can be done without the extreme recovery demands of the Yo-Yo test, it can be repeated during a busy season, which is a key reason India adopted it

    2K Time Trial

The 2-kilometre time trial is one of the simplest yet most effective tests, requiring players to run two kilometres in the shortest possible time. It measures aerobic endurance and cardiovascular fitness, and is now regarded as a global fitness standard employed by several international teams as either a primary test or an alternative to the Yo-Yo

    Beep Test

The Beep test, or bleep test, is the forerunner of the Yo-Yo. Players run continuous 20-metre shuttles in time with beeps that speed up over each level. Unlike the Yo-Yo, it does not include recovery breaks, making it a test of continuous running and aerobic power rather than cricket’s intermittent, stop-start nature, which is why most boards have moved away from it

Which countries use which fitness tests in cricket

While the tests themselves are broadly universal, different boards have adopted different assessments as their primary benchmark, often adjusting the required standards over time

    India

India used the Yo-Yo test as their headline fitness marker for years, with a benchmark that rose from 16.1 to 17.1 under Virat Kohli. After Adrian Le Roux took over as strength and conditioning coach, the Bronco test replaced the Yo-Yo as the primary assessment, with a standardised benchmark of around 5.15 to 5.20 minutes, alongside a 2K run to be completed within nine to 10 minutes

    Australia and England

Australia and England have long favoured the 2-kilometre time trial as their preferred measure of endurance. The test’s simplicity and the ability to train specifically for it made it the standard for both boards, with reported Yo-Yo benchmarks for England around the 19 mark on the occasions it has been used

    South Africa

South Africa is among the strictest enforcers of the 2K time trial, using it as a hard selection criterion. The requirement famously cost Dané van Niekerk a place in the Proteas Women’s squad for the 2023 T20 World Cup after she missed the 9-minute-30-second women’s benchmark by 18 seconds, with the men’s standard set at around 8 minutes and 30 seconds

    Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka switched from the Yo-Yo test to the 2K time trial as their main fitness assessment, and have progressively toughened the benchmark. The target was tightened to around 8 minutes 10 seconds, with players running slower than that facing possible retention of a portion of their contract fee until they meet the standard

    West Indies and Afghanistan

The West Indies made the Yo-Yo test mandatory for selection across both men’s and women’s teams from December 2018, with the men’s minimum reported at around 17.5. Afghanistan adopted a similar model, requiring a Yo-Yo score of 17.3 for senior national selection and 17.1 for their emerging players

    Pakistan and New Zealand

Pakistan has used the Yo-Yo test as part of their fitness protocols, with a reported benchmark around 17.4, though the standards have fluctuated over the years. New Zealand, like England, has leant towards higher Yo-Yo markers reported near 19 while also incorporating time-trial-based endurance testing

Why the shift towards standardised testing matters

The wider trend across cricket is a move towards simpler, repeatable and more transparent testing, and India’s shift to the Bronco is very much part of that

The appeal of tests like the Bronco and the 2K time trial is that they leave little room for customised, watered-down targets, which is precisely the problem India identified when overhauling their own system

Ultimately, no single test is universally better, as each measures a slightly different aspect of fitness. The direction of travel, though, is clear, with boards increasingly favouring assessments that hold every player to the same measurable standard, regardless of stature, in the hope of curbing the injury issues that have plagued teams operating in a relentless international calendar
