Maine (WABI) – A cyclosporiasis outbreak linked to the iceberg lettuce recall has reached Maine, with the Maine CDC confirming 10 cases connected to the multistate outbreak
Federal health officials say more than 6,000 cases have been reported nationwide. In Michigan, two people died from the outbreak, though officials said those patients had underlying health conditions. The CDC said the illness is rarely deadly
Cyclospora infection is transmitted by ingesting food or water contaminated with Cyclospora oocysts. The parasite infects the small intestine

Other symptoms can include vomiting, body aches, low-grade fever, and other flu-like symptoms
If untreated, the illness may last for a few days to a month or longer and may follow a remitting-relapsing course, the CDC said. Although cyclosporiasis usually is not life threatening, reported complications have included malabsorption, cholecystitis, and reactive arthritis
The Maine CDC encourages people to reduce their risk by thoroughly washing fresh produce under clean running water before eating and by following safe food handling practices. They say it is important to thoroughly wash produce even if it is labeled as prewashed
The CDC is recommending clinicians test for cyclosporiasis in patients experiencing severe or prolonged gastrointestinal symptoms
