Rosie O’Donnell is opening up about her decision to take the weight loss drug Mounjaro — and the early side effects she began noticing
“I’ve never felt better and it’s sad to me that it took me until I was 64 to get here. But, part of it is Mounjaro,” O’Donnell, 64, said on the Tuesday, August 11, episode of the “Good Hang” podcast. “Three years ago, the doctor told me … they said, ‘You have diabetes, can you take a shot?’ I said, ‘I think so. I don’t know. I’ve never done a shot. Is it insulin?’ … They said, ‘No, it’s this new drug and it really helps with your blood sugar.’”
O’Donnell noted that she was “never” told that rapid weight loss could be a side effect of the drug, explaining that it was her “numbers they were trying to get down.”
Shortly after going on Mounjaro, O’Donnell went to Nobu and couldn’t “eat anything” after son Blake popped the question to Teresa Garofalow Westervelt. (O’Donnell is also mom to Parker, 31, Chelsea, 28, Vivienne, 23, and Clay 13. Blake, 26, and Teresa later tied the knot in 2024.)
“I’m so overwhelmed emotionally by missing my mom [Roseann] and wishing she could have seen and known him and that he got engaged and a brand new start in his life,” O’Donnell reflected, referring to her mother’s death in 1973. “I was full of emotion. So I thought, that’s what it was. Cut to two weeks later, I get on the scale. I call my doctor crying. I must have cancer. I’ve lost 12 pounds and I haven’t done anything. It’s been three weeks since I started that medicine.”
She continued, “I had never lost weight for no reason, even when I tried to lose weight it was hard for me to lose weight. And I had done all those things … but this drug is going to help so many people if they could only stop being greedy bastards and give it to the people who need it at a price that is affordable to everyone. It is a sin to have science come so far to help cure obesity.”

O’Donnell previously shared that she haslost about 60 pounds while taking Mounjaro. In July, she got candid about the children in her family gaining weight after her mother’s death
“My father would give us a one hundred dollar bill and we would go to Foodtown to do the food shopping,” she told People at the time. “Now if you’re 11-years-old and you’re shopping for a family of five, there’s nothing nutritious about it. It was Entenmann’s and Cap’n Crunch and we would always say, ‘Subtotal please,’ and when it got near $100, we’d put back the chicken and the hamburger meat. Everyone got heavy. Everyone was in such grief and trauma.”
“And so Mounjaro saved my life,” she continued. “I’ve lost a pound or two a month for three years. I really wish I could do commercials for Mounjaro and they would drop the price instead of paying me. Because when I see people struggling with obesity, I want to say I know the shame that we carry and the humiliation that is dealt to people who are overweight.”
