    Eli Lilly Sues Six US Companies Over Illegal Retatrutide Sales

    The growing market for weight loss drugs is drawing scrutiny as regulators warn consumers about products that have never cleared human use

    Eli Lilly has filed six lawsuits against U.S. companies that, according to the manufacturer, are illegally selling black-market versions of retatrutide, an experimental obesity drug. The medication has not yet received regulatory approval for use in humans

    The lawsuits target companies operating in various sectors, including compounding pharmacies, medical spas, and online retailers. According to Lilly, they advertised retatrutide products to consumers even though the drug is still in clinical trials

    Retatrutide is undergoing clinical trials

    Retatrutide is in Phase 3 trials as a potential treatment for obesity, type 2 diabetes, and other related conditions. No regulator has approved the substance for human use

    In June, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration stated that selling retatrutide and other unauthorized versions of GLP-1 drugs to consumers is illegal. Such products also cannot legally be made through individualized pharmacy compounding

    What is being sold on the black market is not medicine – it is a completely untested, unapproved product that is not worth the risk

    – Lilly Chief Medical Officer Dr. David Hyman

    High demand for weight-loss treatments has fueled the emergence of a large online market for products purported to contain obesity medications. Lilly said some sellers promoted retatrutide through websites, social media posts, and businesses presenting themselves as medical facilities. According to the company, the products were

    The six lawsuits involve the following companies:

    • Aesthetic Envy Cosmetic Centers;
    • Astra LLC;
    • Legendary Peptides;
    • Striker Pharmacy;
    • Texas Peptides;
    • Lone Star Peptide Co.

    Lilly also said it had provided information on more than 200 individuals and organizations to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the U.S. Department of Justice, state attorneys general, law enforcement agencies, and professional licensing boards

    Growing number of seizures of illegal GLP-1 drugs

    During fiscal year 2025, U.S. Customs and Border Protection intercepted more than 690 shipments of illegal GLP-1 drugs, containing more than 31,000 items in total. In July alone, the number of seizures exceeded 1,400, with customs officers intercepting nearly 90,000

    Every time someone takes one of these products, they are exposing themselves to enormous risk

    – Dr. Max Denning, Associate Vice President, Therapeutic Area Lead – Global Patient Safety Cardiometabolic Health at Lilly

    In addition to the lawsuits, Lilly urged social media platforms, marketplaces, payment services, credit card companies, carriers, and regulators to take stronger action against the sale of unapproved retatrutide products. The company emphasizes that these products have not undergone the necessary quality, safety, and efficacy testing
