Va. (WVIR) – Seniors looking for ways to stay active may already have access to fitness facilities and classes through benefits included in some Medicare and retiree health plans

Charlottesville Parks and Recreation is encouraging eligible seniors to check whether their insurance includes SilverSneakers or Renew Active

Through those programs, qualifying members can use fitness equipment, indoor pools and group exercise classes at participating city facilities without an up-front cost

“Now that you know, take the time. If you have Medicaid and you have Medicaid Advantage or a supplemental plan, go ahead, check it out. See if you have that benefit. If you do, come on, check out our facilities,” said Erica Cotton, aquatics operations manager for Charlottesville Parks and Recreation

Parks and Recreation says the first step is checking with your insurance provider to see whether your plan includes the benefit

Those who qualify should bring their SilverSneakers or Renew Active member ID to a participating facility

The benefit is accepted at Carver Recreation Center, Smith Aquatic and Fitness Center and Key Recreation Center
