Weight-loss jab users warned to declare medication
GLP-1 weight-loss drugs, including well-known brands such as Ozempic, Wegovy and Mounjaro, have surged in popularity across the UK, with an estimated 2.4 million people now taking the jabs. However, only a small proportion are informing their insurance provider before heading overseas
Simon McCulloch from travel insurer Staysure has warned holidaymakers to disclose the medication before travelling, as failing to do so could affect their cover if they become unwell abroad
He told The Times: “The safest approach is to answer every medical screening question fully and accurately when you buy a policy, then tell your insurer if your health or medication changes before you travel.”
The low number of travellers declaring weight-loss injections could be because many people are unaware that they need to disclose them as part of their medical screening
According to Staysure, customers who declared they were taking weight-loss injections were also likely to have other health conditions recorded on their insurance quote. Among those customers, 98% had multiple medical issues listed
The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has advised travellers who are unsure about disclosure requirements to check directly with their insurer
The organisation said: “Providing honest and accurate information about your health will help you to get the right policy for your needs, while failing to do this can cause issues at the point of claim or even invalidate your cover. If you’re not sure what you need to disclose, speak to your insurer who will be able to help.”
