Lincoln’s record strain
The USS Abraham Lincoln is in the midst of a record-setting deployment kept out of port for more than six months, as the carrier’s crew faces morale and mental health concerns while the ship may break a record for the longest trip away from its home port for a US carrier since the Vietnam War

In a letter to the Secretary of War, Senator Richard Blumenthal urged the Navy to clarify conditions aboard a carrier that “has spent more than 250 days on deployment without landing for more than 200 days, setting a record for consecutive days at sea.” The concern extended from politics to the sailors’ families, who rose up in opposition to the Pentagon, expressing worries about their children’s mental health as the carrier continues its longest deployment in the war against Iran, with no clear return date to the United States. The worry turned into a heated confrontation Thursday night with the U.S. Navy leadership at North Island Naval Air Station in San Diego, California, where relatives demanded clarifications from Acting Secretary of the Navy Hong Hao about the crew’s living conditions. Among the most alarming reports were accounts from sailors’ families about attempts by sailors to jump from the ship into the sea; the U.S. Army said it recovered a sailor who had fallen overboard on August 3. The Abraham Lincoln carrier includes five chaplains, a psychologist, a social worker, a prevention coordinator, and a trained dog to support crew morale and mental health. The outrage spilled into a later virtual meeting that night, where the U.S. Navy leadership faced questions and criticism from families of about 5,000 sailors and Marines aboard Lincoln, demanding clarifications about their children’s fate amid the conflict. The USS Abraham Lincoln left San Diego, California, on November 21, 2025, for a mission to the South China Sea before being redirected to the Middle East ahead of the U.S.-Israel attacks on Iran that began on February 28.
