Lincoln’s record strain
The USS Abraham Lincoln is in the midst of a record-setting deployment kept out of port for more than six months, as the carrier’s crew faces morale and mental health concerns while the ship may break a record for the longest trip away from its home port for a US carrier since the Vietnam War

CNN reported that the Lincoln’s crew described conditions including toilets and water fountains frequently closed and hot water often unavailable, and a crew member said, “Everyday we wake up and listen to our Captain speak, we are desperately hoping and anxious for updates on our return,”
The deployment length is tied to a wider pattern in which the US Navy increasingly asks carrier groups to exceed the service’s recommended deployment duration of seven months, according to a CNN analysis of deployment announcements and the USNI News fleet tracker
CNN also reported that two sailors assigned to the Lincoln strike group have jumped overboard in recent months, and that both were rescued alive, while other sailors were prevented from jumping, according to reports from the Navy Times and Stars and Stripes
In response, the Navy told CNN, “We have not observed an increase in suicidal ideations or attempts aboard the ship,” and said it has religious, medical and mental health professionals available to assess and address concerns as they arise

Trump downplays, Kelly presses
Donald Trump downplayed concerns about US sailors enduring the record-setting deployment, telling reporters the deployment was “not nearly long enough” and claiming, “No, they’re not,” when asked whether family members were worried
The Guardian reported that the Lincoln has been supporting the US war against Iran and that Democratic lawmakers are pressing the Pentagon for accountability over conditions onboard the carrier, while the defense secretary, Pete Hegseth, said those conditions had been “completely misrepresented”
In a separate push for accountability, Arizona Senator Mark Kelly blasted Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth for his dismissal of the mental health crisis unfolding aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln and urged servicemembers to get immediate help
Kelly said, “I’d like to see from this administration just once, just one time, someone taking some responsibility for something that isn’t going right,” and he encouraged servicemembers struggling with their mental health to learn and use the re
Kelly also linked the issue to the Brandon Act’s namesake, United States Navy Petty Officer Third Class Brandon Caserta of Peoria, Arizona, who died by suicide after seeking mental health care and being denied

Rotation and readiness stakes
Democrats are demanding answers about whether the Navy can sustain the operational tempo, with ABC News reporting that Sen. Richard Blumenthal sent a letter to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao demanding more information about the extended deployment of the USS Abraham Lincoln
“There have been widespread reports of shortages of basic supplies”
ABC News
Blumenthal wrote that “There have been widespread reports of shortages of basic supplies, water contamination, plumbing issues, deteriorating mental health, deck safety concerns, and disruptions in the mail system,” and he asked whether the Navy can preserve service members’ well-being while sustaining its current “operational tempo.”
ABC News also reported that a U.S. official confirmed a sailor went overboard in early August from the Lincoln and that the incident is under investigation, while Hegseth pushed back on reports of a sailor going overboard and accounts of sailors struggling through an unusually long deployment as “completely misrepresented.”
The Navy’s position, as described by ABC News, was that it has “not identified an increase in reported suicidal ideation or suicide attempts aboard the ship,” while acknowledging that extended deployments place “a significant strain on our service members and their families.”
The stakes for the next phase of the deployment are tied to rotation planning, with ABC News reporting that Cao told Lincoln families another carrier will eventually swap out with the Lincoln, though he did not provide a timeline, and that the USS George Washington is expected to replace the Lincoln as part of a long-planned rotation

Amid a long mission, questions grew about the Lincoln’s prolonged deployment. Democratic members of the U.S. Congress last Wednesday called for clarifications about the conditions aboard the Lincoln after reports of food shortages, plumbing failures, and mental health crises among its crew during its longest deployment in its history. In a letter to the Secretary of War, Senator Richard Blumenthal urged the Navy to clarify conditions aboard a carrier that “has spent more than 250 days on deployment without landing for more than 200 days, setting a record for consecutive days at sea.” The concern extended from politics to the sailors’ families, who rose up in opposition to the Pentagon, expressing worries about their children’s mental health as the carrier continues its longest deployment in the war against Iran, with no clear return date to the United States. The worry turned into a heated confrontation Thursday night with the U.S. Navy leadership at North Island Naval Air Station in San Diego, California, where relatives demanded clarifications from Acting Secretary of the Navy Hong Hao about the crew’s living conditions. Among the most alarming reports were accounts from sailors’ families about attempts by sailors to jump from the ship into the sea; the U.S. Army said it recovered a sailor who had fallen overboard on August 3. The Abraham Lincoln carrier includes five chaplains, a psychologist, a social worker, a prevention coordinator, and a trained dog to support crew morale and mental health. The outrage spilled into a later virtual meeting that night, where the U.S. Navy leadership faced questions and criticism from families of about 5,000 sailors and Marines aboard Lincoln, demanding clarifications about their children’s fate amid the conflict. The USS Abraham Lincoln left San Diego, California, on November 21, 2025, for a mission to the South China Sea before being redirected to the Middle East ahead of the U.S.-Israel attacks on Iran that began on February 28.
