    • Growing GLP-1 adoption creates significant opportunities for Nestlé’s portfolio

Nestlé has announced plans to develop products specifically aimed at GLP-1 users

The food and beverage giant is using nutritional science, alongside AI, to develop tailored products for the millions of people taking GLP-1 drugs worldwide

According to Nestlé’s chief technology officer, Stefan Palzer, Nestlé scientists have been studying the effects of rapid weight loss, including ‘Ozempic face’, muscle loss, nutrient deficiencies, dehydration and fatigue, and are developing products designed to help address them

“We are well positioned with the portfolio,” he told news outlet Reuters. “It’s a huge opportunity for our company.”

The move reflects Nestlé’s efforts to turn the rapid rise of GLP-1 medications from a potential threat into a major growth opportunity

    What is Ozempic face?

Ozempic face is the term used to describe either the puffiness from the effects of GLP-1 drugs or facial hollowness – sagging skin and increased wrinkles – from rapid fat loss

The world’s biggest CPG is using AI to process large volumes of clinical research and identify combinations of nutrients that support muscle health, hydration and nutritional intake

“A big part of weight loss is that people lose lean muscle mass,” says Palzer. “We found a combination of two micronutrients which we industrialised that stimulate the growth of muscle tissue. On one hand you provide protein, on the other hand you stimulate the muscle tissue to grow back faster.”

Palzer says Nestlé has also patented proprietary ingredient combinations for consumers coming off GLP-1 medications. The formulations are intended to help curb appetite as the drugs’ effects fade, reducing the risk of rebound hunger and supporting weight management post-treatment

Alongside ingredient research, the Swiss giant’s also using AI to simulate consumer behaviours and responses, identify emerging trends, and identify reformulation opportunities within a database of roughly 120,000 recipes

Nestlé’s latest move comes as food and beverage companies grapple with the implications of rapidly growing GLP-1 use

The rise of GLP-1 medications has sparked concerns across the food and beverage industry, with many analysts warning that appetite-suppressing drugs could fundamentally alter consumer eating habits

Research has suggested GLP-1 users are more likely to cut back on discretionary purchases, particularly in categories such as salty snacks, sugary beverages and other indulgent products. At the same time, demand is expected to shift towards foods offering higher nutritional value, including products rich in protein, fibre and essential micronutrients

As a result, major food and beverage companies are increasingly reassessing their portfolios and innovation pipelines. And, like Nestlé, rather than viewing GLP-1s as a threat, many are now exploring ways to serve the growing number of consumers seeking products that support weight management, muscle retention and overall nutritional wellbeing while taking the drugs

As GLP-1 adoption continues to reshape eating habits and purchasing behaviour, the drugs are expected to exert an increasingly powerful influence on product development across the food and beverage sector, prompting more manufacturers to follow Nestlé’s lead with targeted nutrition and reformulation strategies
