COLUMBIANA– A member of the Montevallo City Council recently hand-delivered a check for $2 million as the city continues to partner with Shelby County Schools on a new gym for Montevallo High School

Montevallo City Councilmember and Mayor Pro Tempore David King delivered the check to the Shelby County Schools Board of Education during its last meeting on Thursday, Aug. 6

“On behalf of the mayor of Montevallo, the city of Montevallo, the Montevallo Development Cooperative District and our citizens, I would like to thank you all for giving us this opportunity,” King said. “We’re no stranger to collaborative efforts, and we understand that working together, we can all achieve more.”

Previously, the Shelby County Schools BOE approved a project for a new gym to be built for Montevallo High School for approximately $9 million, and the city of Montevallo agreed to help with the project by contributing $2 million

According to King, the city saw that it was running out of space for youth events and, after surveys, began exploring the possibility of building a community center. After the price tag of such a project was found to be too much for the city to take on, the school system approached them with the idea of a new gym

Additionally, as part of a separate project, the Board of Education is leasing a piece of land behind the elementary school to the city to be utilized as a multi-use field for sports programs

“I’m proud to tell you that our Montevallo Development Cooperative District, through the combination of the gym project and the multi-use field project, is contributing about three and a half million dollars to those projects, and we anticipate that the multi-use soccer fields will be ready later this fall,” King said

SCS Superintendent Dr. Lewis Brooks expressed his excitement for the project and partnership. He also thanked Assistant Superintendent of Operations David Calhoun and Facilities and Maintenance Coordinator Barbara Snyder for their assistance on the project

“We are thrilled that we are helping and you are helping to serve the students in the Montevallo community,” Brooks said. “One of the things that I believe in very strongly, and I think we all do, is a sense of community. And one thing that creates community, in my opinion, is schools… We appreciate the partnership, and we look forward to serving the kids in the Montevallo community.”

BOE President David Bobo echoed Brook’s sentiment and also shared his excitement for the partnership and the chance to support Montevallo students

“The collaboration around all of it—I love it,” he said. “It’s just going to benefit so many kids and so many community efforts. We’re very excited about this.”
