Ore. (KPTV) – After Brooklynn Meeker of West Linn found out she had celiac disease, she had to cut out many of her favorite snacks, including Goldfish
Two years ago, Meeker sent a letter to Pepperidge Farm, asking the parent company to “invent” a gluten-free version of the popular snack
“I just had the idea, why not write a letter?” said Meeker, who was 10 years old when she wrote the letter. “I basically wrote that Goldfish was my favorite snack and I was hoping they would go gluten-free.”
Although the letter was well-intentioned, Brooklynn and her mother, Monika, thought it was unlikely they would get a response
“I might have said once or twice, if you don’t hear back, it’s okay,” Monika said
But last week, Goldfish reached out to Monika over social media and sent Brooklynn a special delivery. The company not only responded to Brooklynn’s letter, but Goldfish also sent her a sample of their new gluten-free crackers
“I was like, that can’t be real, that can’t be real,” Brooklyn said
After going over two years without one of her favorite snacks, Brooklynn said she was excited to finally have them back
“I had completely forgotten what it tasted like and I was so excited to try it again,” she said
Goldish told the Meekers it held on to Brooklynn’s letter after all this time, while it developed its new product, and even posted the letter on their Instagram
“Brooklynn’s letter is a great example of the kind of passion that inspires us every day. We love hearing from Goldfish fans, and consumer input helps us better understand what families are looking for,” Goldfish said in an emailed statement. “Goldfish Gluten Free was inspired by years of requests from fans like Brooklynn who wanted a gluten-free option, and we’re thrilled to now bring the iconic Goldfish taste, shape and smile to even more snackers.”
Monika told FOX 12 that one of the best parts of this whole experience was getting to see the response from other gluten-free customers who are looking forward to trying the snack that truly smiles back
“It seemed like such a small thing but to have kids be able to eat snacks that everybody else eats as someone with Celiac, it’s just really cool,” she said. “The little things like, ‘Oh, Brooklynn, you’re our hero.’ It shows that one kid really can make a difference.”
Goldfish’s gluten-free crackers are scheduled to hit the shelves in November
