DES MOINES, Iowa —
The Davis County Community School District is helping expand public access to measles vaccinations by deploying its year-old ‘Mustang Mobile Microgrid’ for its first emergency response
How it works is quite simple

It’s a mobile generator that is powered by solar. The system can provide power for about eight hours
On Tuesday, it will support ADLM Environmental Public Health, which serves Appanoose, Davis, Lucas and Monroe counties. The microgrid will power a mobile hospital trailer where health officials plan to administer measles vaccinations to as many as 280 people
The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services announced on Monday that there is an active outbreak of measles in southern Iowa with 12 confirmed cases so far
School district officials said the system was designed to support needs beyond school property
“One of the things we talked about was we would team with emergency management and make this trailer available to other districts as well — other communities in case of emergencies, or just a need,” said Danny Roberts, Davis County Community School District
The $30,000 Mustang Mobile Microgrid was funded in part through an Iowa Rural Development grant, which covered 95% of the cost
“It’s through the Iowa Energy Office,” said Chris Ball, Consultant. “They were looking at ways they could provide funding to help communities get renewable mobile energy for exactly this type of situation.”
Possible locations connected to person-to-person measles exposure include sites in Clive, West Des Moines, Des Moines and Bloomfield
The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services advises people who are unvaccinated or unsure of their immunity to contact a health care professional or local public health agency about receiving the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine
