    NBC Universal, Inc.

A clinic that served Boyle Heights residents affected by the fire at Lineage’s warehouse said 40% of its patients had serious acute health problems. Karma Dickerson reports for the NBC4 News at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2026.

Hundreds of people living near the Lineage Logistics warehouse in Boyle Heights that burned for two weeks in June were treated at mobile clinics for fire-related maladies, including smoke inhalation and toxic exposure, according to a report released Tuesday

The report from St. John’s Community Health, which dispatched three mobile clinics to the area after the fire erupted, found that 469 of 1,306 patients — roughly 36% — seen at the clinics were dealing with fire-related exposure issues, such as respiratory infections, eye disorders, persistent cough and asthma exacerbation

According to the report, 26.6% of patients were diagnosed with toxic smoke exposure, while 24.5% were diagnosed with hazardous substance exposure

“Dozens of patients (were) prescribed anxiety and/or sleep medication to treat acute stress post-fire, which was related to: environmental exposure, sleep disruption and insomnia, housing instability, lease termination requests, relocation concerns, ongoing uncertainty regarding environmental safety, and psychosocial distress associated with displacement and recovery,” according to the report

St. John’s officials said the data was collected from patients who visited the mobile clinics between June 17, when the fire erupted, through July 31

“Close to 40% of people we provided health care to had serious, acute, and devastating health problems,” Jim Mangia, president and CEO of St. John’s, said during a Tuesday news conference. “We know that acute health conditions, particularly those caused by intensive environmental exposure, lead to long-term chronic and deleterious health impacts that disable and damage the health of our communities.”

Los Angeles City Councilwoman Ysabel Jurado, who represents Boyle Heights, said in a statement the report puts hard numbers behind what residents have been saying since June 17 — that it was not just a warehouse fire but a public health emergency

The stench of rotting food still lingers in Boyle Heights as Lineage continues its cleanup effort after a fire tore through its cold food facility. Darsha Philips reports for the NBC4 News at 11 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 17, 2026.

“I am deeply grateful to St. John’s for bringing care directly to residents and documenting the toll this disaster has taken. From the beginning, my office worked with city departments and the Red Cross to open the Smoke Relief Center at Pecan Recreation Center,” Jurado said

Jurado noted the City Council is scheduled Wednesday to consider her motion directing the Los Angeles Housing Department to identify potential funding for HVAC cleaning, odor remediation and air-filtration systems for seniors and low-income households impacted by the fire

“Recovery will not end when the site is cleared. It requires continued health support, a full investigation into what failed and real accountability. Lineage and every responsible party must be held accountable for the full cost of recovery. Boyle Heights should never again be forced to pay for a disaster it did not cause,” Jurado said
