The Redwood Region Audubon Society will present a free guided field trip at the Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary Saturday from 8:30 to 11 a.m
Bring binoculars and meet trip leader Tylor Bell-Rogers at the end of South I Street (Klopp Lake) in Arcata to enjoy incredible views of Humboldt Bay, easy-to-walk trails and a great diversity of birdlife
Marsh tour
Friends of the Arcata Marsh will sponsor a free tour of the Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary on Saturday
Meet leader Gina Rogers at 2 p.m. in the lobby of the Interpretive Center on South G Street for a 90-minute walk that is held rain or shine. Come explore the trails at the marsh and learn about its history and conservation values. For more information, call 707-826-2359
Wetlands workday
The Redwood Region Audubon Society will present a for a Wigi Wetlands volunteer workday. Saturday from 9 to 11 a.m
Volunteres are needed to help create bird-friendly native habitats and restore a section of the bay trail by removing invasive plants and trash. The trail section is located behind the Bayshore Mall, and volunteers will meet in the parking lot directly behind Walmart. The Audubon Society will provide tools and gloves. Garden workday
Volunteers are needed to work on a sheet-mulching project at the community driven McKinleyville Botanical Garden in Hiller Park on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m
This small and lovely garden features plants that attract pollinators and birds. Most of the plants are native, low-maintenance and need little water
To get to the garden, go west on Hiller Road to the parking lot for Hammond Trail/soccer field/dog park. The garden is adjacent to children’s playground. All are welcome to participate
Poetry event
“A Reason to Listen,” a long-running live poetry event, is moving to the Historic Eagle House Ballroom, 139 Second St., Eureka, on Sept. 10
The first show of the season will feature one of the event’s founders, Therese Fitzmaurice, who will be doing a book release reading from her new collection, “Beyond the Horizon.” Copies of her book will be available for purchase and signing
There will also be music by DJ Goldylocks and live art with Dre Meza. The open mic is available to the public and sign-ups begin at 6 p.m. The show starts at 6:30 p.m. There a $7 cover at the door (cash or Venmo only)
