Wis. (WBAY) – Emergency vehicles, responders in protective gear and simulated smoke were visible near Austin Straubel International Airport on Wednesday as agencies conducted a full-scale emergency <a href="https://healthylife7.com/76th-mobile-brigade-takes-on-combat-readiness-<a href="https://healthylife7.com/bird-dog-exercise-for-your-core-how-to-do-it-safely/” title=”Bird dog exercise for your core: How to do it safely”>exercise-26/” title=”76th Mobile Brigade takes on Combat Readiness Exercise 26″>exercise
The scenario simulated an aircraft crash on the runway. The response brought together multiple agencies, including airport personnel, first responders, airline partners and emergency management
Emergency crews responded to the simulated crash, with smoke used to add to the realism. The exercise tested the initial response and communication and coordination between the groups involved
Around 100 volunteers played the part of crash victims
Dan Kane, emergency management director for Brown County, said exercises of this scale require significant re
“One of the valuable parts of an exercise like this full scale is because a lot of times this is very labor intensive. There’s a lot of re when we’re able to do something like this, it’s just extra important that we take full advantage of it because they don’t come around all that often,” Kane said
Paul Cooney, a volunteer in the exercise, said he was reassured by the response
“It’s just, it’s comforting to know how good they are at what they do. They’re very common. They’re the way they’re handling things. They’re very efficient. They went through all the things they needed to do,” Cooney said
The FAA requires airports to conduct one of these full-scale exercises every three years. The goal is to identify problems or gaps in the response so responders are better prepared if they ever have to deal with a real aircraft emergency
The exercise was expected to continue through noon
A similar drill happened Wednesday at Appleton International Airport from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m
