The reopening date for the Schweitzer Wellbeing Center at Pullman is being pushed to January while renovation and expansion work continues, according to a Wednesday announcement
Additional project requirements and finishing details have extended construction past October’s initial completion estimate, the center announced in a news release
Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories property teams began remodeling the Military Hill pool in May
The facility was built with a $2.5 million donation by the Schweitzer family and opened in 2000 after being donated to the Pullman School District. SEL and the Schweitzers bought back the pool for $5 million in 2025 to revitalize outdated infrastructure
The project is being completed in two phases. The first includes renovated locker rooms, a new HVAC system, refinished pools and a resurfaced pool deck, an expanded office space, updated pool features, fresh paint and new lighting

A more ambitious second phase will expand the facility with a 13,000-square-foot, two-story addition. The center’s larger vision includes a new fitness center, a multipurpose fitness classroom, meeting space and a new lobby
Additional temporary closures will be required through 2027 for phase two. Timelines have not been announced
The center is beginning to recruit lifeguards and swim instructors in preparation for reopening. Strong swimmers interested in becoming lifeguards can attend a certification course held Sept. 24-26
The center is also participating in the National Lentil Festival on Saturday. Participants can stop by its booth for a chance to win free fitness classes, day passes and swag. One free annual membership is also up for grabs
