1 Drugs Reshape Healthcare: Beyond Weight Loss

A panel discussion on Barron’s Roundtable examined the expanding use of GLP-1 medications beyond weight loss, exploring new medical applications, potential side effects, and the implications of the next generation of these drugs for patients

According to a report by Wells Fargo, GLP-1 weight loss drugs are reshaping the healthcare industry by addressing obesity. The report, released on Thursday, notes that much of the American healthcare system has been structured around obesity, given its prevalence: 40.3% of adults are considered obese and 9.4% severely obese

Usage of GLP-1 drugs surged over 140% from 2022 to 2024, significantly impacting hospital services aimed at treating obesity. During the same period, bariatric surgery volumes fell by 34.1%

John Teasley, market executive for Wells Fargo Healthcare Banking, commented that GLP-1s are marketed as weight-loss drugs but are rapidly becoming one of the most disruptive economic forces in healthcare. He noted that this medication class has the potential to reshape how providers generate revenue, where investors allocate capital, and how consumers engage with their health

The report indicates that hospitals are adapting to a changing landscape caused by the rise of GLP-1 semaglutide drugs, as obesity patients who previously might have undergone surgery after diet attempts now have a pharmaceutical alternative that is visible, reversible, and socially normalized

GLP-1s may also impact cardiology. A trial showed that their use reduced major cardiovascular events by 20% in overweight or obese adults without diabetes. If this trend prevails at scale, hospitals could see fewer procedures, repeat admissions, complications, and downstream interventions, leading to a sizable reduction in demand for those services

Other aspects of managing chronic obesity may evolve with increased GLP-1 use, including more longitudinal management, outpatient visits, side effect monitoring, and medication management. This could also affect treatments for obesity-related comorbidities like knee and hip replacements, sleep apnea, and metabolic liver disease

Teasley said the biggest takeaway from their research is not that healthcare is shrinking, but that it is being rewired

The report also highlights that the rise of GLP-1 treatments is reshaping pharmaceutical development strategies. An analysis by Deloitte found that obesity drugs are now the largest component of the late-stage pipeline, surpassing oncology treatments for the first time in 16 years. GLP-1 drugs drove this increase almost exclusively, raising obesity treatments from 1% of the pipeline in 2022 to about 25% now, while oncology slipped to 20% after being at 32% in 2022
