The Clifton Utl, short for “utility,” retools the Clifton 8 with a sleek exoskeleton upper. Polyurethane covers the mesh base with a grid pattern, terracing and numerous acute angles including a series of arrows pointing toward the heel. Beside giving the shoe an early cyber aesthetic, the exoskelton provides greater lockdown than naked engineered mesh, as does a new heel counter in the same rubbery material. Down low, the sole unit remains unchanged from the 2021 runner with compression-molded EVA foam.
Cilanto is the name of the Clifton Utility’s launch colorway, and the namesake hue appears only sparingly through the outsole, insole and lateral Hoka branding. A mix of tonal gray on the upper and a gray and cream upper then combine to create an effect much like the namesake herb in a helping of rice
