I like old things. Things that have stood the rest of time: old friends, old books, old music. I’m no Luddite-I get around just fine on my smartphone and computer-but tables and chairs are more my kind of technology. They’ve been around for thousands of years and will probably be around for thousands more.
I was once a decent athlete, a high jumper at LSU, where I also earned a degree in Construction Management. These days, I still lift weights, but my real passion became long-distance road cycling-a journey that began around 1990. After 30,000 miles on a narrow bike saddle, though, sitting’s not what it used to be. So much for biking.
I read a lot. These days, my tastes lean toward the classics, great literature, history, biography, the Bible, and philosophy. I’ve dabbled in biblical Greek and Russian and can read a little of both.
I’ve done my share of traveling, in the U.S. and abroad. Eventually, the part I liked best was hearing the U.S. passport control agent say, “Welcome home.” I hope they still do that-it was a nice touch.
Most evenings you’ll find me in a recliner with the lights off, incense burning, and music playing-country, gospel, or Bach. I don’t watch much TV, unless LSU is playing.
I spent my career around craftsmen. Given the choice between having a beer with the CEO of a Fortune 500 company or an ironworker, I’ll take the ironworker every time. He’s bound to have better stories.
I’ve got great kids and grandkids and, all things considered, a life I’m grateful for. Except, maybe, for that pain when I’m sitting.
