GADSDEN COUNTY, FL (WTXL) — A building that once served another purpose in Quincy is now getting a new life as a fitness and wellness hub for the community

YMCA of the Sunbelt opens in Quincy, bringing fitness and wellness to Gadsden County

The YMCA of the Sunbelt officially opened its doors in Quincy, bringing its services to people living in and around Gadsden County. The location is inside the former Massey Pharmacy building, a space now being used to promote health and wellness

The facility is open 24/7, and membership is currently $35

Pat Gallagher, Chief Operations Officer of the Y, spoke at the grand opening about what the YMCA means to a smaller community

“The Y isn’t just for big cities. We’re also in smaller communities. Then there is communities that can’t put a bigger Y in, and we’ve been able to come in and serve that community with a smaller gym. It means everything for us to be able to serve them, but it also opens up a door for them to get healthy,” Gallagher said

The story behind the location is just as significant as what is happening inside. The building’s owner is allowing the YMCA to use the property at no cost for the rest of her life — an arrangement that gives the organization a place to operate while keeping the facility rooted in the community

Lisa Sigelbaum, owner of the building, explained her decision

“This is my way of doing my small portion my small gift to these people. So that’s what it’s all about. Use what you have to do the most good that you can do because none of us is going to take it with us when we’re gone,” Sigelbaum said

The goal is to make fitness and wellness re to travel outside the city
