White Coat Ceremony Welcomes Miller School of Medicine Class of 2030

The University of Miami Miller School of Medicine welcomed 204 incoming medical students during the Class of 2030 White Coat Ceremony, celebrating the start of their medical education and their commitment to compassionate, ethical patient care
For 204 students entering the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, the journey to becoming a physician officially began Friday evening, surrounded by the people who helped them get there
More than 1,500 family members, friends, faculty, alumni, and supporters filled the Watsco Center for the Class of 2030 White Coat and Pinning Ceremony, marking the newest students’ formal entrance into the medical profession and the beginning of years of training
One of the Most Competitive Classes in Miller School History
The incoming class was selected from nearly 10,000 applicants, making it one of the most competitive applicant pools in the Miller School’s history. The 204 students arrive with a median GPA of 3.92 and an average MCAT score of 516. Nearly half will pursue dual degrees, combining their medical education with fields including public health, research, business and policy
But the evening was about more than academic achievement. As students received their first white coats, they were reminded that becoming a physician means accepting a responsibility that extends well beyond the classroom, to care for patients, serve their communities, advance knowledge and uphold the trust placed in them
“The white coat is a symbol of authority and empowerment but, most importantly, it represents a beacon of hope for suffering patients,” said Henri R. Ford, M.D., M.P.H., dean and chief academic officer of the Miller School. “But this responsibility cannot be fully realized until you learn to exhibit the following qualities: character, compassion, sensitivity, patience, honesty and integrity.”
Among the students was James Chen, who joined the Miller School after completing a Bachelor of Arts, Medicine, Health and Society, with a minor in business, from Vanderbilt University
“To me, the white coat ceremony is a time to reflect on everything that helped bring me to this moment of starting medical school,” said Chen. “The first thing I think of is my God and my family that deserve more credit than me. Hopefully, it fills them with great pride and joy to see me continue on my path to becoming a doctor.”
Honoring a Legacy of Medical Education Leadership
The ceremony also featured the inaugural Laurence B. Gardner, M.D., Distinguished Speaker, an endowed speakership established through a generous donor gift to honor Dr. Gardner’s more than four decades of service, leadership and dedication to the Miller School and its community
Delivering the inaugural address was Latha Chandran, M.D., M.P.H., M.B.A., a nationally recognized leader in medical education who served as executive dean for education and policy and founding chair of the Department of Medical Education until July 2026. Under Dr. Chandran’s leadership, the medical school launched NextGenMD, an innovative curriculum emphasizes case-based and small-group learning, early clinical skills, community involvement, mentorship and resilience
“Your goal should be to NEVER lose sight of your why,” Dr. Chandran said. “Once you don that white coat, you represent this noble profession, you represent this great school and you represent this outstanding University,” Chandran said. “Always conduct yourself in a way that brings pride to all those around you including your family that has supported you to get here today.”
Future Physicians Take Their First Professional Oath
Following the remarks, students crossed the stage to receive their first white coats, made possible through the generosity of Miller School alumni, faculty and friends. Students also received backpacks containing new stethoscopes, generously provided by the Mitchell Wolfson Sr. Foundation
The ceremony concluded with the Class of 2030 publicly reciting the Hippocratic Oath, pledging their commitment to the ethical practice of medicine and the well-being of their future patients
“Miami is an incredible and fascinating city in which to pursue medical education” said Aaron Denberg, an M.D./M.P.H. student who joined the Miller School from Northeastern University. “I’m excited to get started.”
