Houston humidity, meet your match: Simple tips for frizz-free hair

    Published: August 23, 2026 at 2:02 PM

HOUSTON – Living in Houston, we all know what the humidity does to our hair. From the frizz to flyaways, Houston heat has other plans for your hair

But you’re not alone. A few simple habits and styling tips can help keep your hair soft, shiny and frizz-free

Toni Solinas and Lonnie Cole, owners of Frequency Salon in Clear Lake, shared their go-to tips to tame that frizz and keep your locks looking their best — no matter what the Houston weather brings

According to hair experts Solinas and Cole, these simple changes can make all the difference:

    • Use a shower head filter. It can help reduce heavy metals and chlorine in your water, keeping hair softer and shinier.
    • Watch out for avobenzone. This ingredient, often found in sunscreen, can cause extensions and highlighted hair to turn orange and can be difficult to remove. When possible, opt for a mineral sunscreen instead.
    • Shampoo twice, then condition. The first shampoo loosens dirt and oil, while the second wash gives hair a deeper cleanse. Let conditioner sit for two to five minutes before rinsing.
    • Don’t skip leave-in products. Leave-in conditioners, creams, gels and mousses can help add moisture and control frizz.
    • Never sleep with wet hair. Hair is more fragile when it’s wet, and this is especially important if you have extensions. Sleeping with wet extensions can also lead to mildew.
    • Use dry shampoo as a primer. Applying dry shampoo before styling can help prolong your look and keep curls from falling.

Once your hair is clean and hydrated, it’s all about how you style it

    • Always use heat protectant. Apply it before using a flat iron or other hot tools, and keep your heat as low as possible. Finer hair textures generally need less heat.
    • Finish with hairspray. A light overspray after styling can help keep humidity at bay. Bed Head Masterpiece is one of Frequency Salon’s favorites for its humidity protection.
    • Add a little oil — and save it for last. Hair oil helps lock in moisture and can also help break up curls for a softer finish.
    • Finish with dry texturizing spray. It adds volume and that effortless, piecey finish.

Solinas and Cole’s friendship and professional partnership came full circle when they decided to open a salon of their own

After reconnecting following high school, Cole encouraged Solinas to attend beauty school. The two eventually worked together at a salon and often talked about opening a business of their own. That idea became a reality when Solinas called Cole one day and asked if she was ready to open a salon together

The name Frequency Salon is rooted in the idea of energy — the connection and energy we transfer through everything we do each day

The salon specializes in professional hair extensions and prioritizes continuing education, with weekly classes for new stylists and monthly education for the entire salon team

Since opening its doors in Clear Lake on Aug. 1, 2023, Frequency has focused on creating a space where stylists can continue learning while helping clients feel confident in their hair
