Cinnamon water has become a popular morning drink for people looking for simple ways to support weight management, blood sugar and heart health. The preparation is also quite easy. A cinnamon stick is soaked in water, usually warm water, and the drink is then consumed after the spice has had some time to release its flavour and compounds. But while cinnamon has been studied for several possible health benefits, it is not a magic drink for losing weight or treating any disease.
How to make cinnamon water in 2 easy steps
The basic preparation does not need much. Take one small cinnamon stick and put it in a glass or cup of warm water. Let it sit for several minutes so the flavour and aromatic compounds can move into the water. After that, remove the cinnamon stick and drink the infused water. Some people prefer having it in the morning, including on an empty stomach, but there is no strong evidence that drinking it specifically at that time makes cinnamon more effective.Using a stick can also be more convenient than adding ground cinnamon because it can simply be removed once the water has been infused.
Can cinnamon water help with weight loss?
This is where the popular claims need some caution. Cinnamon has been investigated for its possible effects on metabolism and blood sugar, and these effects could indirectly support weight management. However, drinking cinnamon water by itself is not expected to cause major weight loss.A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis published in the Journal of Health, Population and Nutrition looked at 49 randomised controlled trials involving 3,038 adults. The researchers found improvements in several markers, including blood glucose, blood pressure and cholesterol. They also found a reduction in waist circumference, but cinnamon supplementation did not significantly reduce body weight or BMI. The researchers rated the overall quality of evidence as very low.So, cinnamon water may fit into a healthy diet, but it should not be treated as a shortcut for losing kilos.
What about blood sugar?
Blood sugar is one area where cinnamon has received considerable attention. The 2025 review found that cinnamon supplementation was associated with improvements in fasting glucose, HbA1c, fasting insulin and post-meal blood glucose. These findings suggest that cinnamon may have some role in supporting glucose control, although the studies used different amounts and forms of cinnamon.WebMD also notes that studies have suggested cinnamon may help with blood sugar control, particularly in people with type 2 diabetes, but says more research is needed before firm conclusions can be made. That means cinnamon water should not replace diabetes medicines, a proper diet or medical advice.
Cinnamon may also support heart health
The same 2025 review found that cinnamon supplementation was linked with lower LDL cholesterol, total cholesterol and triglycerides, along with higher HDL cholesterol. Some reduction in systolic and diastolic blood pressure was also reported.Cinnamon also contains compounds such as cinnamaldehyde and polyphenols, which have antioxidant properties. WebMD says cinnamon has shown antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, although more research is needed to establish how useful these effects are for treating health conditions.
Which cinnamon is better and what are the risks?
There are different types of cinnamon, with Ceylon and cassia being two of the main varieties found in food products. One important difference is coumarin, a naturally occurring compound that is present in much higher amounts in cassia cinnamon. High intake of coumarin over time can be harmful to the liver. Ceylon cinnamon contains much less coumarin and may therefore be a better choice for regular use.The main point is not to keep increasing the amount because a little cinnamon water has not produced the desired result. People with liver problems, those taking medicines for diabetes or blood thinning, and pregnant women should speak with a healthcare professional before using cinnamon regularly in medicinal amounts.Add ![]()
