Here’s a confession: I actually really like going to bed. Gone are the days of partying until 4am, but I’m not the sort of person who’s tucked up before 9pm, either. I have a full-time job, a toddler, a social life, and I like to move my body – I’m lucky if I get into my covers before 11pm most nights, but however late I get to bed, I have one rule: I never skip my evening self-care routine
It isn’t a 15-step, Gwyneth Paltrow-style ritual. I don’t have the time, patience or bathroom counter space required for that. Instead, it’s a handful of little things that signal to my brain that the day is over and it’s finally time to unwind
My husband calls it ‘my potions’, which I initially found amusing, but have now completely adopted. Because after a day of work, childcare, answering WhatsApp messages, trying to fit in a gym session and generally keeping everyone alive, a little bit of magic is just what I need
My routine starts with a magnesium supplement. Taking magnesium has been a game-changer for me when it comes to falling asleep faster and getting more restful sleep, so this has become my official signal that the day is finally winding down

Next, I put on my pyjamas – and I love a matching PJ set. There’s something about putting on proper pyjamas that makes me feel like I have my life together, even when the reality is anything but. The set must be soft, luxurious and make me feel slightly more elevated than the woman who spent the last hour tripping over the same Hot Wheels monster truck on the kitchen floor. Also, sleep is one of my favourite hobbies. Why wouldn’t I dress up for it?

Chelsea Peers makes the best pyjamas out there. I wore them on the morning of my wedding, I buy everyone I know a set for Christmas – they’re the GOAT

Next comes the non-negotiable: skincare. I don’t care how tired I am, I will always take my make-up off and do my skincare. While my 21-year-old skin could get away with sleeping in mascara, present-day me doesn’t want to take that chance. And at the bare minimum, I always cleanse, tone, and moisturise, with serums and retinol thrown in there most nights, too

If I have a little more time, I get the big guns out. A couple of nights a week, I use an LED mask after cleansing. When they first entered the market, LED masks were seen as a luxury, but there are so many options available now that most people I know have one – and I recommend them to all of my mum friends. I pop it on, get into bed and read while it works to improve the appearance of skin firmness, radiance and luminosity, as well as fine lines and skin texture. Cue comments from my other half about sleeping next to ‘Robowife’…

Shark’s CryoGlow LED mask makes me feel like I’m visiting the spa, even if only for ten minutes a day. If a full LED mask isn’t within your budget, LED devices are a nice way to introduce the technology into your life, like this one from STYLPRO

Once a week, I’ll swap Robowife for an old-school face mask. I leave it on for 10-15 minutes while I read my book, which is just long enough to feel like I’ve really committed to self-care but not so long that I’ve driven myself wild with anxiety over losing out on precious sleeping time

I switch between hydration and exfoliation when using a face mask, and for the former, I love Perricone MD’s hyaluronic mask; it leaves my skin refreshed and plumped

I’ve also reached the age where I’ve become genuinely addicted to hand cream. I used to see women in films applying hand cream before bed and think it was a strange amount of attention to give your hands. Now, I am that woman

Perricone MD’s Plasma Plus+ range is divine, and this hand cream works hard to combat the signs of ageing, as well as leaving skin healthy and moisturised

Finally, it’s time to hop into bed. I’m a firm believer in having gorgeous, hotel-style bedding and a pillow that delivers a comfortable night’s sleep. We spend so much time in our beds, so why not splurge on the good stuff? A luxurious sleeping environment immediately makes me feel more relaxed

Then, there’s quiet. No scrolling through emails, no ‘quick’ tidy-up that somehow turns into cleaning out the cupboard under the stairs, and no mentally running through tomorrow’s to-do list. I get into bed and enjoy a few deep breaths where nobody needs a snack, a Teams response, or saving from a Thomas the Tank Engine-related emergency
Of course, this is the ideal version of my routine. Some evenings, if I work late, my ‘self-care ritual’ is essentially magnesium, face wash and lights out – and that’s fine too. What I don’t agree with is putting far too much pressure on ourselves to make self-care another thing we need to be good at. You don’t need a two-hour bath, a perfectly curated bathroom shelf and seventeen different candles to look after yourself
The thing we should focus on is a few little rituals to make us feel like ourselves again. And honestly, after a busy day of being a mum, wife, editor, friend, daughter, athlete (ahem), personal driver, snack dispenser and general household administrator, I think I’ve earned a little bit of magic
