OKLAHOMA CITY –
This Saturday morning from 7 – noon, Scissor Tail Park will be full of fun and entertainment, all with the purpose of getting Black men healthy
“Black men’s awareness day is an initiative to catch those preventative health risk that happen in America that plague African American men,” said Dierdra Coleman, event organizer with African American Male Wellness Agency OKC
Sadly, statistic show that many of the health challenges of Black men could be prevented or maintained with regular doctor visits
“The idea is to bring the clinic to the community,” said Coleman. The event is designed to give men a nonthreatening comfortable environment to get checked out
“We’ll have biometric screenings, blood pressure, glucose, blood sugar, all the things,” said Coleman
Arming men with the personal information that could literally save their lives
“So, when you know your numbers, you can do the preventative methods that you need to be healthy and maintain a life,” said Coleman
Health screenings start at 7:00 a.m. with a 5K run or 1 mile walk around the park at 9 am
“You can walk a mile around the water, it’s going to be very scenic, very tranquil,” said Coleman
There will be a senior pavilion, a kid’s pavilion, cooling stations and lots of free water. There will be a DJ, a live band and a lot of other entertainment on stage
“What better place to be to have the “funnest” doctor’s appointment that you’ve ever had,” said Coleman
And though the event target is black men, everyone is invited
“While it does say Black men’s wellness day, it is fitness and wellness for everyone. So, bring your family, bring your friends, bring the man that you love,” said Coleman
The event is Saturday from 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and registration can be done online or in person and everything available that day is free
“We want you to get checked out and not checked in,” said Coleman
