You can’t question VJ Edgecombe’s work ethic. This offseason, the Philadelphia 76ers’ sophomore guard has been everywhere, and he’s typically seen in workout gear with a basketball in his hand. From FIBA play to other runs, including fellow NBA players, Edgecombe is staying ready for the Sixers’ upcoming season
One of his latest offseason runs was with an interesting group. Not only did the PLYS UNTD workout include several notable NBA stars, but two of them are notable former teammates of the 76ers’ superstar forward, LeBron James
Edgecombe puts in work with former LeBron teammates
Kyrie Irving and Anthony Davis were sharing the court with Edgecombe recently. Although the two players are well beyond their years running with LeBron, a curious Edgecombe could gain some advice about working with the former NBA MVP, who is expected to play a big role for the 76ers next season
Irving, 34, was a member of the Cleveland Cavaliers from 2011 to 2017. He didn’t work alongside LeBron throughout that entire run, but the two were teammates for the Cavs’ championship run in 2015-2016. After LeBron and Irving separated, the star guard played for the Boston Celtics and the Brooklyn Nets. He currently plays for the Dallas Mavericks
Edgecombe and Irving are clearly two different players, but the Mavs guard could have some valuable advice for his fellow guard. As for the other former LeBron teammate, Anthony Davis, he played with James more recently. The 33-year-old big man was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers in 2019. He was a player that James wanted LA to make a clear target, and they got him
In their first season playing together, James and Davis won a title. They would continue working together through the 2023-2024 NBA season, but Davis was traded after playing in 42 games during the 2024-2025 NBA season
A big season for Edgecombe
The 21-year-old second-year guard might find himself as the fifth option within the Sixers’ starting lineup, but that doesn’t mean he won’t play a key role for Philly
Even with a team that includes LeBron James, Tyrese Maxey, Jaylen Brown, and Joel Embiid, Edgecombe is still viewed as a franchise cornerstone for the 76ers. After he gets a valuable year or two of advice and lessons from LeBron James, Edgecombe will continue moving up the pecking order, as the 76ers are banking on him to be a key player for years to come
