Taking on the Elephant in the Room: GLP-1 Medications

Why Weight Loss Belongs in Every DC Practice
    Jason Strotheide, DC
    WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

    • There’s an elephant in the room that needs to be addressed directly: the explosion of GLP-1 weight-loss drugs.
    • The rise of weight-loss drugs hasn’t made chiropractors less relevant in this conversation. It’s made us more necessary than ever.
    • Forward-thinking chiropractors are recognizing that adding weight-loss services to their practice isn’t just smart business. It’s better medicine.

Chiropractic care has always been about more than the adjustment. At its core, our profession is built on the principle that the body has an innate ability to heal itself – and that our job is to remove the barriers standing in its way

For decades, that mission has focused primarily on spinal health, nervous system function and musculoskeletal correction. But as the healthcare landscape evolves – and as patients demand more comprehensive, results-driven solutions – forward-thinking chiropractors are recognizing that adding weight-loss services to their practice isn’t just smart business. It’s better medicine

The Reality DCs Are Facing Right Now: The GLP-1 Craze

There’s an elephant in the room that needs to be addressed directly: the explosion of GLP-1 weight-loss drugs. Many chiropractors are frustrated – and rightfully so. Patients are walking in already on medications, often convinced that injections are the only effective solution. It can feel like lifestyle-based, natural recommendations are being drowned out by pharmaceutical messaging

But here’s the reality: This trend doesn’t eliminate the need for what we do – it actually amplifies it. GLP-1 medications may produce short-term weight loss, but they do not address the underlying behaviors, metabolic dysfunction or lifestyle patterns that created the problem in the first place. And increasingly, both research and real-world experience are highlighting two critical issues:

Side effects are common – including nausea, vomiting, gastrointestinal distress, fatigue, and in some cases more serious complications. Clinical trials of semaglutide have reported gastrointestinal side effects in up to 40%-70% of patients.1

Weight regain is the norm after discontinuation – In the STEP 1 trial extension, participants regained approximately two-thirds of their lost weight within one year of stopping semaglutide.2

This creates a massive opportunity for chiropractors. Patients are actively looking for a better way – something sustainable, something natural and something that actually teaches them how to take control of their health long-term. That is exactly where we come in

More than 40% of American adults are classified as obese and nearly three-quarters are overweight.3 These patients are already in your office, presenting with low back pain, disc issues, joint degeneration, inflammation, and chronic conditions directly aggravated by excess weight

You can adjust them, prescribe corrective exercises and manage their symptoms … but if the underlying weight issue isn’t addressed, you’re not solving the problem. You’re managing it. And that’s not why most of us got into this profession

Weight loss, when done correctly, is not about quick fixes. It’s about restoring proper metabolic function, reducing systemic inflammation, improving movement, and teaching patients how to live in a way that supports long-term health. That aligns perfectly with chiropractic philosophy

    Short-Term Impact on Patient Outcomes

When a patient begins a structured, clinically guided weight-loss program alongside chiropractic care, the results can be dramatic – and fast. Reduced body weight means:

    • Less mechanical stress on the spine and joints
    • Decreased inflammation
    • Improved mobility and range of motion
    • Better response to adjustments

Research shows that even modest weight loss (5%-10% of body weight) can significantly reduce joint pain and improve physical function4 Patients who lose even 10-15 pounds often feel the difference quickly. And just as important – they see it. That creates momentum

When patients experience visible, tangible progress, compliance skyrockets. They keep their appointments. They follow recommendations. They stay engaged. You’re no longer trying to convince them the care is working – they feel it

There’s also a powerful psychological shift. Patients who have struggled with their weight often feel stuck and discouraged. When you provide a real solution – something structured, guided and effective – you become the provider who finally helped them move forward. That builds trust. And trust builds long-term relationships

The Long-Term Advantage (That Drugs Don’t Provide)

This is where chiropractic-driven weight loss truly separates itself from pharmaceutical approaches. Sustainable weight loss:

    • Slows spinal degeneration
    • Reduces long-term joint stress
    • Improves metabolic health
    • Supports cardiovascular function
    • Lowers systemic inflammation

Most importantly, it teaches patients how to maintain those results. That’s the critical difference. Patients who rely solely on medication often find themselves trapped in a cycle – lose weight, stop the drug, regain the weight. Without behavioral change, nothing sticks

In contrast, long-term lifestyle-based interventions have been shown to produce more durable weight maintenance when adherence is sustained.5 When patients learn how to eat, how to structure their habits and how to support their metabolism naturally, the results become lasting. And that’s what patients actually want

    The Practice Growth Perspective

From a business standpoint, integrating weight loss into your practice is one of the most efficient ways to grow

    • No major overhead
    • No additional staff required
    • Seamless integration into existing visits
    • High patient demand

It also differentiates your practice in a crowded market. When patients are comparing providers, the chiropractor who offers a complete wellness solution – including weight loss – stands out immediately. You’re no longer just treating pain. You’re transforming health. And the referral effect is powerful

A patient who loses 20-30 pounds becomes a walking testimonial. People notice. They ask questions. And when the answer is, “My chiropractor helped me do this,” it creates opportunities that traditional marketing can’t replicate

A Natural Extension of What We Already Do

Adding weight-loss services isn’t a departure from chiropractic philosophy – it’s an expansion of it. We’ve always focused on addressing root causes, supporting the body’s natural ability to heal and creating conditions for optimal function. Helping a patient lose excess weight is one of the most direct ways to do all three

    The Bottom Line

The rise of weight-loss drugs hasn’t made chiropractors less relevant in this conversation. It’s made us more necessary than ever. Patients are searching for something sustainable. Something natural. Something that works beyond the short term

The patients are already in your office. The need is already there. The only question is whether you’re going to meet it

The practices that do will lead the profession forward – with better outcomes, stronger patient relationships, and a model of care that reflects what chiropractic has always been at its best: helping people live healthier, longer, and without limitation
