New York (WWNY) – Indian River’s high school students will start this school year off with a new gymnasium
Indian River’s athletes played a lot of games on the old court over the last 25 years. A quarter of a decade’s worth of use, two coats of finish, and a school mascot change from the Warriors to the Wolves in 2024 meant a new gym floor was needed
With capital project funding and a few months of work, the new floor is now finished, in time for the new school year
“It’s just pretty cool to know that here at Indian River our students and our community gets to have these types of things is quite the blessing,” said Bob Alexander, Indian River High School athletics director
A new shine, new lines and new mascot adorn the space
The change has Alexander remembering the school district’s athletics architect, who helped design the gym and passed away recently
“I think of Sandy Overton, who was here for 20 years in ’89 to, whatever it was – 2009. He just passed away last week. He’s kind of the architect that got us started on this vision, and I get the privilege today to see more of it. This is part of his legacy, and I got to be part of it,” Alexander said
Alexander said the school will add a new banner, condensing the championship banners into one. He said that even though Indian River students are no longer the Warriors, as Overton once knew them, the Warrior spirit will remain
“Once a warrior, always a warrior, that doesn’t go away, but we also have the wolves, which is the same family, same community. So, blending those both together, I thought people have done really well with that,” Alexander said
