The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is awarding over $281 million in grant funding opportunities to 15 programs that address addiction, mental illness, and overdose.

Reuters reported that the funds will support programs revolving around various substance abuse, suicide treatment, trauma care, recovery services, and others.

An announcement on the funding for the programs was announced Monday by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), a division within the HHS.

How will the funding be allocated to mental health programs?

In a release from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, the agency offered details on how the money will be distributed for the programs.

A significant portion of the money, worth $68.2 million, will be used to expand access to medication-assisted treatment for opioid ‌use disorders

Additionally, the agency also announced funding opportunities for community overdose prevention, integrated physical and behavioral healthcare, and suicide prevention programs on college campuses.

And some of the money will be distributed for recovery support services and education initiatives centering on federal behavioral health privacy regulations
